Locally shot 'Ides of March' an early Oscar favorite; release date moves up
As for the film’s release date, RopeOfSilicon.com recently reported that Columbia has moved “Ides” up from its original, tentative October 14 slot to October 7, where "Ides" will, as of now, go head-to-head at the box office with “Real Steel” (also filmed in the Detroit area) and “Martha Marcy May Marlene.”
"Ides" stars Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Evan Rachel Wood, and Clooney, who also directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay (with Grant Heslov).
Based on Beau Willimon's play "Farragut North," "Ides" casts Clooney as a Howard Dean-type Presidential hopeful, while Gosling plays the lead character — a wunderkind press secretary who finds himself embroiled in the ugly world of back-room politics.

Oscar material!? Jeez! Those Hollywood types can sure put a good spin on things. With press like that it's possible that the movie appears to be a dud, and this is one way of hyping it up to try and boost ticket sales. Everyone knows movies are "made" in post production, the editing room, it could get really messed up before it even opens, much less be considered oscar-worthy.

Sounds like somebody is getting a little ahead of themselves... kind of like with the Barracuda jobs story yesterday. Must be a slow news day.

seriously? A movie nobody has seen...that may still be in the editing process is an Oscar fav? If this is true the only logical explanation is the Oscars are fixed.

I think if you look at the movies that are announced for the next year, you can pretty well see that some have a chance at an Oscar and some don't. Of course, there are a lot of "answer unclear--ask again later." These guys aren't making a money-back guarantee, they're taking an educated guess. It's just a fun thing. So how about this: the LA Times can make all the predictions they like, but annarbor.com took this one too seriously...like its paper predecessor, annarbor.com is way too eager to hype anything with a vaguely positive connection to Ann Arbor. This town has some serious insecurity issues. I'm still rooting for Ides of March, though.

It is dubbed "one of 15 strong potential contenders" While my "fixed" allegation was intended as hyperbole I still say until someone sees it there is no way to call it an Oscar contender. Its not like George Clooney hasn't done some average movies, its not like good casts haven't done some average movies either. See Ocean's 11,12 and 13 for instance

It's not that crazy. It has a good cast, a writer that has already worked with Clooney on a good film, and it's based on a well-known play. So it's not a completely unknown quantity. And they're just saying it's one to watch, not that it's a likely winner.
