Former 'American Idol' contestant Matt Giraud to sing national anthem at Michigan spring football game
Fox
Matt Giraud — a former contestant on "American Idol" and a 2003 graduate of Lincoln High School — will sing the national anthem Saturday at the University of Michigan spring football game, U-M announced.
Giraud came in fifth place in the 2009 edition of Fox's televised singing competition, the most popular series on TV. Born in Dearborn, was raised in the Ypsilanti area but now considers Kalamazoo his hometown.
A longstanding tradition, the spring game is the final football practice of the season, in which the team plays a full game against itself that is open to the public. The game starts at noon at Michigan Stadium, and admission is free.

I liked the way Jose Feliciano sang for the Tigers!

Strangely enough, he is also the only Idol contestant ever to be voted off three different times by the viewers.

Ok this is a little weird. -He did not go to Michigan (Western) -He was too embarrassed to admit he was from this area when he was on the show (said he was from Kalamazoo) -Oh, also he's not a very good singer so, why exactly?

Moscow On The Huron is right about the national anthem. I've said something similar earlier: http://www.annarbor.com/community/news/opinion/is_the_star-spangled_banner_just_another_song/ I hope Mr. Giraud does a good job. He seems like a decent singer, so let's see how he does.

The national anthem for a spring training? seriously? Can't we keep it for really special occasions?

Some people can get pretty upset about something so trivial...

I could care less. How about a hard-working U-M music student instead.

What drives me nuts is how some performers think singing the National Anthem is about them and their performance. It's about something bigger than them. It's should be seen as a privilege for them to perform it, but instead they see it as privilege for us to listen to them perform it. I hope they're not paying for this. There are plenty of people who are capable and willing to do it for free, would consider it an honor, and would do it right (as opposed to, say, the supposed professional Christina Aguilera).

"What drives me nuts is how some performers think singing the National Anthem is about them and their performance." Agreed. Which is why the best performance of the National Anthem I have ever heard I hear every Saturday there is a home game in the Big House. The MMB's performance of the National Anthem at the memorial to Gerald Ford in Grand Rapids moved me to tears. Good Night and Good Luck

I think the Cactus Cuties should sing it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLpMoMkNyYg&feature=related There is a petition for them to sing at the next Super Bowl.
