Vote for the best Ann Arbor area breakfast joint
Angela Cesere | AnnArbor.com
Here's your chance to help your favorite bacon slinger and flapjack flipper earn the title of Best Breakfast Joint in Washtenaw County. Get your vote in, and tell all your friends. Voting ends on Tuesday, March 5, at 5.pm.
MLive statewide entertainment reporter John Gonzalez will be hitting the road March 11-15 to vist the top vote-getters in every market to determine Michigan's Best Breakfast Joint.
Because the intent is to find the best everyday breakfast joint, we have excluded restaurants that only serve breakfast a couple of days a week. Sadly, this means that reader favorites Selma Cafe and \aut\ bar are disqualified.

to the person named frankshater...You are entitled to your opinion regarding Franks Restaurant, but the topic is to discuss the best breakfast place, not "lets bash a local small diner that has been around since 1969", You happen to be in the minority with your comments. Maybe I will visit your place of work and critique it, why don't you be big enough to post where that is since you have no problem bashing your neighbors...maybe A2.com will do a best of for that!

darn, i missed the voting. not sure if it was nominated, but we often eat breakfast at the uptown coney island on jackson rd - among other things, their spinach and mushrooms are fresh (not frozen or canned), they will do egg-beaters or egg whites, great breakfast options for a reasonable price. family owned. don't have the homemade bread like angelo's and zingerman's - do miss that. for downtown A2, I am going with angelo's, as cliche as that is. I just wish the wait wasn't so long and it was a bit more comfortable. broken egg has terrible and rude service for below average food (have tried it several times, won't go back). cafe zola - good food but rude service, noisy and expensive. zingerman's - some things are tasty but heavy and expensive. we can definitely use another GOOD breakfast place downtown A2. my two cents.

Thanks to everyone who submitted nominations and voted for their favorite restaurant. As previously noted by Jessica we will be reconciling the submitted votes to remove invalid duplicates and posting the final results later this week. With that in mind, please understand that the ranking of the poll above may not reflect the actual final ranking.

I'm going to go "Ann Arbor" on all of you and pick the obscure one that's not on the list - The Espresso Bar at 327 Braun Court - Terrific waffles and fried chicken and breakfast sandwich. Local ingredients, best espresso drinks, small business. They had a awesome Disco Brunch a couple of weeks ago with mirrorball and DJ. The only downside for many people - It's not an aging hippie place

Village Kitchen would be way up in the polls, except many of their customers probably don't use computers, if you know what I mean. Great breakfasts and service. Helen, the owner, is super, and her staff is the best.

Nicks is my favorite by far: excellent food, great service, and cool atmosphere! The server Shelly is such a joy, she keeps us coming back a few times a week :) The best!!!! West Virginian with feta!!!

I do not understand the affection for the Broken Egg- over Nick's... they, I believe, are owned by members of the same family- and many of the their menu items are very similar, if not identical, except Nick's is less crammed with people, easier to park at, doesn't require the waits that the Broken Egg does and the service is better. Same food, nicer atmosphere, better service... seems like a no-brainer to me. But maybe all the UM crap on the walls counts for some people...

OK. So. The clear winner is Angelo's. Angelo's is an Ann Arbor institution without compare. It's locally owned and everything about it screams Ann Arbor. The food is amazing. The locale is delightful. The family that owns it is amazing. Everything about Angelo's screams best breakfast in Ann Arbor. I am seriously disappointed they are not winning. Also, my daughter has a crush on one of the owner's kids.

Anyone who does not select Broken Egg as the best breakfast place in Ann Arbor has probably not been there. ( I can't believe there is anyone who hasn't!) Broken Egg is an Ann Arbor landmark. I know people who visit A2 from all over the country who know of this wonderfully creative and unique restaurant. We have a real GEM in our city!!! The best in A2!!!!

I will never understand the hype over Broken Egg. I went there a number of times (at least 5-6), but haven't been in a couple years, mostly due to the terrible service at every one of those previous visits. I do not mind having to wait for a table. I do, however, mind that in none of those visits did I ever get my food inside 20-30 minutes after ordering. Sometimes it was cold. I also got eggs that were nearly solid when I asked for over-easy. Having waited so long, I did not dare send it back. I've also found the host and waitstaff to be cold and uncaring. Maybe things have changed since I was last there, but there are enough good breakfast places in this area that I have no need to give Broken Egg another chance at my business.

@a2miguy.. I don't understand why you went there "(at least 5-6)" times if you had a bad experience on your first visit. And here you are posting negative things about The Broken Egg in which you had complete control on where to go for breakfast on your second visit. There are a lot of restaurants listed on here that I have tried(ie.. an establishment where you have to wear a HAZMAT suit to use the WC) and I would never go to again but I don't go about writing negative comments on that establishment (in which I've only been there once). For me if I had a bad experience on my first visit, then I would never go there again unlike you 5-6 times. I LOVE "THE BROKEN EGG", I still go there after 13 years living in A2 from Los Angeles, CA. I love their selections and Carol is AWESOME and so are the ENTIRE WAIT STAFF.

@g. lipps - I was being truthful, not nasty. When I posted the comments, Broken Egg was in the lead in this poll. I simply did a little lobbying (and unlike politicians, my comments were 100% true). It seems to have worked, and as you can see, others share my opinion and did so in nastier fashion than I did.

Frank's is disgusting. We kept hearing about how awesome it was, and we work right across the street, so we went one morning--all of us felt sick for the rest of the day. We joked about gaming this poll to get Frank's to #1, but we're not sociopaths. Also, Afternoon Delight is generally disgusting.

I find it odd that the Broken Egg has so many votes, yet so few positive comments. I'm not taking anything away from the Broken Egg; I've never eaten there. Usually, however when people are so enthusiastic about a restaurant, they leave many more favorable comments about the place than the Broken Egg seems to have received. At this point, the Broken Egg has received nearly 1 out of every 5 votes in the poll but has only been mentioned in one out of every 25 comments. For me, that makes the voting in this poll highly suspect.

@YspiLivin.. Some of us where we think is a GREAT PLACE TO EAT does not necessarily post any comment but do spread it by word of mouth to friends and colleagues. I found out about THE BROKEN EGG from a UofM Student who happened to be on my flight from Los Angeles, CA to DTW. He recommended The Broken Egg to me 13 YEARS AGO and I am still going there.. There are so many restaurants that I LOVE AND DISLIKE here in ANN ARBOR but I don't post any comment either on their website or anywhere else. I just spread it by word of mouth.

If I remember correctly, the initial asking was for the Best Breakfast in Washtenaw County. Now youo have limited it to the Ann Arbor Area. What happened to Kathy's Diner on M52 just south of Chelsea at the Stockyards. HAs anyone ever tried this great diner? Zingermans is a great place for other types of food, but come on, Breakfast, really. Basic breakfast food should be the only consideration or you must spell out the rules!! Really thinnk you would be more than pleased with Kathy diner! As little mikie used to say on TV, Try it , uyou'll like it!!

Eliminating places? Selma is great and has a purpose beyond the food and fellowship. However, many of the best breakfasts in Ann Arbor are prepared by the bed and breakfast owners! Had the priviledge of eating with a consultant who stayed at Davies House Inn and the fruit, yogurt, and granola parfaits and the hazelnut French toast were awesome. On another morning, he said he had a breakfast burrito stuffed with scrambled eggs & smoked salmon and topped with tomatoes roasted in balsamic vinegar. We're missing the boat if we are not recommending locally owned places for our Ann Arbor visitors,

Any omelette on the menu and a coffee is over 10.00. Any order of pancakes at 5.99 and a side order of any meat is another 3.29. Now add drink to that oder and you are over 10.00 again. A family of 4 is easily over 40.00.

Pool is confusing - might be my computer, but the relationship of the buttons to what you are voting for is quite odd. The button is above the candidate, not next to or beneath it. (at least on my computer) This is roughly the electronic equivalent of a hanging chad.

We've updated the coding so the buttons should appear inline with the options.

Nick's...plain and simple is the best.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Rabid. Nick's is amazing and the great staff -- the always-present Nick included -- is second to none.

I have yet to have anything mediocre there. All local fresh ingredients. Nick is there every time I have went and always remembers us. The pancakes are great as is the stuffed french toast. The skillets are filling and tasty. I haven't ever ordered any lunch type items though so there's that..

I'm seeing it up there next to Angelo's in the poll....but I've had several people go there and tell me it was nothing special at all. I'm still going to try it out myself...I'm just surprised at all the votes for the place after only hearing mediocre reviews of the place from friends and family. And I do oh so love pancakes...

I just voted for Achilles on Packard. It's out of the way, so I doubt it will win, but it deserves at least a bronze medal for its French Toast.

Darn, I wish I could get my vote back. I ate there for the first time about a month ago and it was great!

I agree. But for me, it's a toss up between Achilles and Village Kitchen.

Nice list selection...but I predict Angelo's will top it. It's ok...you can be a hater about it...but nearly EVERYTHING on their menu stands out as special or has NO equivalent in Ann Arbor. Big Breakfast is about the closest you can get to finding something similar to. Deep Fried French Toast....NOPE no one has awesome like this. Eggs Benedict......NO ONE has hollandaise like theirs.... Oh man I just got SOOOOOO hungry......

I do love that Dick Siegel song. I was just singing it last night as I was going over the poll choices. "Eggs over easy, hashed browns and you."

There's a song about Angelo's?

I don't think Angelo's won last year. Just because somebody sang a song about your restaurant 40 years ago doesn't make it good. Maybe overpriced, but not good.

It's such an excellent problem to have, isn't it? The Ann Arbor area has amazing food options.
