Even in those miserable non-teaching years, I still always thought of September as the beginning of the year. (And it is Rosh Hashanah time!) Beyond that though, September ushers in a new school year and a sort of clean slate for students. New teachers, new classes, new curriculum...you can literally reinvent yourself as a student (I had a student do this a couple of years ago. He got sent to my room and announced that he wouldn't get in trouble like he did at his old school. Guess what? He didn't and had a great time in middle school).
