The weather forecast for Sunday is iffy, but the food forecast is unbeatable. More than 35 Ann Arbor-area restaurants are gathering on Main Street on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to offer sample-sized portions of signature dishes during the Taste of Ann Arbor.

"Food tastes just as good in the rain," laughed Maura Thomson, executive director of the Main Street Area Association, the non-profit organization that sponsors the event.

For more than 20 years, Taste of Ann Arbor has been the unofficial kick-off of the Ann Arbor summer festival season. The streets are always packed with curious food fans tasting the best that Ann Arbor restaurants have to offer. A list of the restaurants can be found on the Main Street Area Association's website.

In addition to the tasty eats, you can boogie down to local entertainers on the big stage at the intersection of Main and Liberty streets. "Bank of Ann Arbor stepped up to the plate to sponsor the entertainment with their Sonic Lunch Series this year," Thomson said. "They like to say that they're 'serving up the entertainment.'"

Performers include guitarist Laith Al-Saadi, acoustic roots band Dragon Wagon, and the cast of Ann Arbor Civic Theater's “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”

If you're bringing your kids, make sure to head to the block of East Liberty Street between South Main Street and South Fourth Avenue. This year's family activity area will feature activities from the University of Michigan Exhibit Museum of Natural History and the Ann Arbor District Library.

"The AADL is bringing all sorts of old-fashioned activities such as hula hoops and sidewalk chalk. This year they will even have an old-fashioned photo booth where your kids cram in and get those cool black and white photo strips," Thomson said. "They will also be signing kids up for their summer reading program. Last year they signed up hundreds of kids at the event."

Taste of Ann Arbor is just awesome! You can eat a large and delicious lunch for under $8. I went last year and my favorite sample was actually the chocolate and peanut covered frozen banana pops from Rocky Mtn Chocolate factory. Nothing like a frozen treat on a hot summer day.
