Salsa and guacamole carry risks; Barack and Michelle Obama are earning cool points with foodies
CNN: Salsa, guacamole can carry an unhealthy kick, CDC says A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has pointed to the popular Mexican food staples salsa and guacamole as the cause of one in 25 outbreaks of food poisoning in the United States.
One of the problems, according to the CDC study, is that both salsa and guacamole are usually made in large batches.
“Small amounts of contamination can affect lots of servings," explained CDC epidemiologist Dr. Rajal Mody. "There is the potential that salsa and guacamole are not properly refrigerated. And we know salsa and guacamole are often made from diced fresh produce items - tomatoes, cilantro, peppers, which we know have been implicated as sources in past outbreaks.”
Seattle Times: Obamas combine refined palates with political savvy It was clear from the beginning that the Obama family had a love of good food. Rick Bayless was invited to design and cook a state dinner. First Lady Michelle Obama planted an organic garden at the White House. But it has been the Obamas' restaurant choices that have earned them a lot of ink - and respect - in the foodie community.
"Many of the restaurants they go to, they're the sustainable, local and organic: Blue Duck Tavern, Komi. These are all places that trumpet that whole movement," said Nycci Safier Nellis, publisher of TheListAreYouOnIt.com, which tracks the Washington food scene.
