Restaurant inspections in Washtenaw County for July 2012

By Washtenaw County Public Health

Washtenaw County Public Health's Environmental Health Division inspects all food service establishments in the county, including bars, restaurants, schools and seasonal vendors — about 1,110 facilities in total! Inspection results are now published monthly on AnnArbor.com.

Why do we inspect?

Inspections help to ensure that safe food is served to the public. Sanitarians (otherwise known as health inspectors) use the Michigan Food Law of 2000 and the 2005 FDA Food Code when doing the inspections and are looking for critical and non-critical food safety violations.

How frequent are inspections?

Routine inspections take place twice per year, or once per year if the business is only open seasonally. Routine inspections are unannounced. Environmental Health will initiate additional inspections if a foodborne illness or other substantial complaint is reported.

Each inspection is a snapshot in time, and conditions found at the restaurant are not necessarily the conditions that could be found in the restaurant at other times. Sanitarians ask many questions about the menu, operations and procedures to get the best possible idea of the day-to-day conditions of the restaurant.

Critical vs. non-critical violations

Sanitarians are looking for critical and non-critical violations during inspections. Critical violations can lead directly to food-borne illness and must be corrected immediately. Examples of critical violations include an employee not washing hands before preparing food, storing food at improper temperatures and a dish machine not properly sanitizing dishes.

Non-critical violations may not directly lead to food-borne illness but are important to the overall safety and sanitation of the facility. Non-critical violations must be corrected within 90 days of the routine inspection and include items such as employees not wearing hats or hairnets, not covering food during storage and dirty floors.

What if I have a complaint?

Environmental Health responds to general restaurant complaints as well as food-borne illness complaints. Please call our office at 734-222-3800 to file a complaint or to report a suspected food-borne illness.

We used to go to some of the poorly rated establishments until we learned of their rating, then stopped. Send a message, stop eating at restaurants with critical violations.

And tell them why you're not coming back. If you don't, they will likely assume their business is falling off due to the economy, or some other "it's not my fault" thing.

Hmm...I suppose there is an important place for these inspections -- but frankly, I certainly don't personally care...not going to stop me from going out to eat at the establishments listed...and not going to speculate on anything else. If it were that critical and not fixed, it would be closed down. As long as I don't have to do the cooking, I do not care if their refrigerator shelves were somewhat warped or if the tiles on the basement floor were loose....Feed me, clean your place, and that's about all I ask for....

Poor cleaning and poor refrigeration are the top issues. In don't know what it takes to get shut down, but places like Arbor Brewing, Corner Brewing (same owners), Zingerman's, and others seem to have critical violations EVERY TIME. Yet not that several establishments have no violations of any type.

Zing violations? Ann Arborites with excessive discretionary income don't care.."Why, nonsense Lovey, those silly inspectors just don't understand that Somalian Yak Cheese is supposed to be stored at 72 degrees, it enhances flavor, don't you know?"

Wow. My Depot Town Aubree's really went down hill from the 1/23 review to their most recent. I wonder what changed or who started slacking off. I would love to be a drain fly on the wall of that conference that the inspector is calling for regarding their kitchen temperature.

I'm struck that St. Joe's did so poorly. Total of 4 crit. and 6 non's at the freaking hospital and right after they did that big spread on how they have changed their food service and made it all healthy. Bet heads are rolling!

Wed, Aug 29, 2012 : 7:04 p.m.

These reports are always such good reading lol. The Taste of India report, with which I started, is absolutely nauseating! Mold and debris on many surfaces, major indications of very very lax and infrequent cleaning (mold on the soda dispensers and surfaces used very often?! ew!!), no handwashing done or towels at any of the unused handwashing stations, raw meat thawing overnight at room temp, and on and on. One of the violations had been cited as as third-time deal, yikes, and yet the only thing they need do now is submit some sort of 'plan' for changing their behavior. Next time caught on this count, they have to attend some sort of class with the county. I sorta wish the penalties were stiffer!

Hey, what about Selma Cafe? Oh, that's right they get a free pass and can do whatever they please without any inspections. Meanwhile ALL the restaurants and cafe's on this list, as well as many other not mentioned, must undergo inspections and public scrutiny - as well as A2.com comments. Hey Selma punch drinkers, are you listening/reading? This cannot be right?

DBH

Thu, Aug 30, 2012 : 3:06 p.m.

Ms. Kelly, I did not mean to suggest that you were the only one stirred up by the Selma Cafe situation. You may be, you may not be. If what you wrote in your last reply is entirely accurate, you might want to consult an attorney in order to find out why you apparently were treated differently in your endeavor.

andy kelly

Thu, Aug 30, 2012 : 10:09 a.m.

Yes, I have called the different departments from the health depart to the country extension to inquire about the free pass. Not one of these entities interprets any violation in what Selma Cafe is doing. Yet, when I attempted the same model this last summer I was threatened by the health department as well as the country inspection board or operating a restaurant without a license or health inspections. DBH, I suppose that you are correct in that discussing this blatant disregard and sidestep for local health laws and food laws for one "special" entity does not stir anyone up except for me. It is amazing to me that some many people just do not care - that is, until they try it themselves and receive the same threats, then maybe they will! up this information has not lead to a .

DBH

Thu, Aug 30, 2012 : 4:08 a.m.

Ms. Kelly, I saw that Lisa Gottlieb had replied to your comment in the earlier story referenced in your 3:36 PM reply in this thread. Did that not satisfy your earlier questioning as to why Selma Cafe was not inspected? If not, might I suggest you contact the Health Department yourself to better understand the reason for the absence of inspections of Selma Cafe? It seems (to me at least) that would be more productive than continuing to post questions in your comments and replies about why they are exempted. The answer (I assume there is a valid one, though I do not know what it is) appears to lie elsewhere than here.

Yes, I am very familiar with the inspections laws and how they operate - but Selma Cafe has NEVER been inspected. They fly below the radar. Thus, the question.

Every establishment is inspected twice per year. Not all restaurants are inspected in July believe it or not. Annarbor.com publishes these reports every month.

I've never heard of the Selma Cafe, but if they do in fact serve punch, well I'll have to try them out! If been hooked ever since I first tried Mike Tyson's Punch Out. Though Punch Drunk Love was kinda depressing.

I bet the folks at Taste of India wished the inspectors used the standards of India during inspections. And Passport is under new ownership and they really have no idea what they're doing. Better shape up!

A bit disappointed to see how Corner Brewery fared. I wonder how directly that translated to how well they maintain their facilities for brewing/fermenting/bottling/etc

It seems to me, reading this month after month, that places that specialize in something OTHER than food and just happen to offer food (schools, golf clubhouses, breweries) tend to do worse with the restaurant inspector, on average, than restaurants whose main income is from food.

Wed, Aug 29, 2012 : 10:22 p.m.

It looks like most of them are food related, although there was one for brewery drainage and some for cleanser bottles that weren't labeled. I was never much of a fan of their food anyway, so this doesn't scare me much. Their inspect in February looked to be much more troublesome. Hopefully the link below works. http://www.swordsolutions.com/inspections/pgesearchresults.asp?County=28

When the restaurant reports are completed, each establishment should be required to post the report with detailed descriptions of the violations in their restaurant within view of the customers such as the entry way or waiting areas. This would cause the owners/managers to prioritize the health departments requirements.

I think that LA does, too.

Other cities have something like this big A,B, or C letter ratings that are posted right next to the front door. I think it's NYC.

I just wonder how well they train their workers on the do's and don't of inspections. Drinks, food storage and cleaning product placement, the bathrooms. There is so many many things.

And the ones with zeros either knew they where coming or were doing something right. The one thing I saw was that the food inspector skipped Ecorse road completely. Is there something they know that we don't? Great list.

They may check multiple restaurants in that area another during another month.

14 non-crits and NO criticals at Dan's Tavern.....looks like someone ruffled the inspectors feathers...

Billy- absolutely correct. If you run a clean operation, they'll dig deeper to find violations. Always took it as a complement.

Nope...what happens is that there are NO criticals to get them on but the inspector still wants to get them...so they find every single little tiny thing they can and you get a laundry list of non-crits. It's a rarity to see 14 nons and ZERO crits. Nearly ALL food service places have almost a dozen non-crits at any one time. The most minuscule thing can be construed as a violation. From literally finding a single crumb....to a misspelled food label... This also works in opposite too....if you have a good rapport with the inspector they won't write you up for menial non-criticals, especially ones that can be quickly corrected. \ Inspectors have a rough job because they are disliked by default...sometimes it can seem like the ONLY reason they are there is to disrupt your business. The thing is...they're only doing their job, which is to make sure food service establishments are up to code. I never feared inspections because I kept things clean. The guys who fear inspections don't take that little extra time to KEEP things clean. You don't have to waste hours scrubbing grease off of racks/walls/etc. if you don't let it get to that point in the first place.

Actually that would be the reversed. If the inspector was up tight? He would be giving out more criticals then non. I remember years ago a friend who worked at some restaurant got shut down because the inspection went from bad to worse.
