Oscars snack ideas: Morsels for movies' biggest night

The Oscars are just days away, so it’s time to decide what to snack on as the golden statuettes are awarded on Sunday night, Feb. 27, (8 p.m. EST on ABC).
The 10 Best Picture nominees cover a wide range of subjects from tragic ballerinas to eye-patched cowboys to a man to was not supposed to be king. Whether you are hosting an Oscar party, going to one or sitting on the couch in your pajamas, why not join in the festivities and dedicate your snacks to the nominees?
While the stars parade down the red carpet, set the mood by pouring some sparkling wine and adorning it with a sliver of starfruit.

Start out with some popcorn, a great companion to white or sparkling wine. Go ahead and be crazy. Actually air pop the popcorn instead of using the microwave. Or dress up mundane popcorn by flavoring it with grated parmesan cheese or a drizzle of white truffle oil. That is popcorn with style.

For more choices for the evening’s beverages, have some cocktails on the rocks, perhaps a margarita or a gin and tonic, a la 127 Hours. In honor of Annette Bening’s stressed-out, grape-loving character in The Kids Are All Right, have plenty of red wine on hand.

For some light fare, serve some tea sandwiches dedicated to The King’s Speech. Take any sandwich bread you like, spread it with some softened cream cheese, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper, perhaps some chopped chives, and place a thin slice of roast beef on top. Trim off the crusts and slice diagonally into four triangles. Or instead of roast beef, use smoked salmon or just some thinly sliced vegetables, such as cucumber, zucchini or radish.
The Social Network and The Fighter are two films set in Boston, so serve some New England clam chowder. Just keep a pot on the stove for instant serving or pour individual servings into shot glasses for guests. Don’t forget the oyster crackers.
For the dream-within-a-dream-within-a-dream film, Inception, serve a similarly constructed appetizer: bacon wrapped figs. Slice open dried figs and insert an almond, walnut, or pecan and/or some goat cheese into each one. Then wrap the fig with a small slice of bacon and broil for about 8-10 minutes.
Any type of fuss would be wrong for True Grit and its no nonsense lawmen, so why not just serve some jerky? This is Michigan. There are two jerky outlets just south of Ann Arbor on Route 23. Choose good ol’ fashioned beef or maybe turkey, ostrich or elk.
And who could resist some buttered, parslied Yukon gold potatoes while rooting for the iconic characters in Toy Story 3? In a saucepan, cover a pound of baby Yukon gold potatoes with salted water and bring to a boil, then simmer for 5-8 minutes or until fork tender. Drain the potatoes and toss with 2-4 tablespoons of butter, chopped parsley, salt and pepper to taste. For an easy, starchy fix, just stop at your favorite restaurant and pick up an order of potato skins to go!
For a true Appalachian treat from Winter’s Bone, try making this apple cake from Martha Stewart which uses a mountain staple, dried apples:
Four Layer Appalachian Stack Cake
For Black Swan, dip some marshmallows in melted chocolate for the perfect (and easy) two-sided snack.
Whatever mood you are in on Oscar night, take some cues from these ideas and treat yourself or your guests. As for me, I’ll be drinking sparkling wine and wearing my boa as I root for Colin Firth.
