Limburger cheese spread is not for everyone

By Marge Biancke

Marge, I need your help! For years Kraft made a Limburger cheese spread. So long ago that my great grandfather used it. It was tradition in my family to spread it on rye bread and top it with a slice of sweet onion. We especially liked it during football games. Kraft no longer makes this spread. Do you happen to have something like it? Thank you. - Joe Dennis

Kraft stopped making this spread 2 years ago. I know that for a fact because my husband was also disappointed when they discontinued the product. We searched all of the grocery stores around here to buy the last jars.

This was one of those "you either like it or hate it " products. It is definitely an acquired taste.

To appease my husband I developed a similar tasting spread. It is not the exact item but if you enjoyed the Kraft products, you should enjoy this one. You have a choice of using butter or mayonnaise in this spread depending upon the consistency you prefer.

Just a note: This spread may offend the olfactory senses of some people.

Limburger spread

8oz. Limburger cheese (Arbor Farms carries a good brand)

8oz. real cream cheese

2 Tbsp. unsalted butter at room temperature (if you like a firm spread) OR 1- 2 Tbsp. mayonnaise (if you like a creamier spread)

2 tsp. garlic powder, not garlic salt

1 tsp. onion powder

1. Place all ingredients in a food processor or medium-sized bowl. Blend or stir until well blended.

2. Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
