Is there a toxin in your veggie burgers?

By Tina Reed

Making buzz in the food world - or at least the part that enjoys soy-based faux meat products - is a report from Mother Jones.

Turns out, your veggie burger may have been bathed in a neurotoxin.

The report, based on an investigation by the Cornucopia Institute, said many brands of non-organic veggie burgers have the Environmental Protection Agency-registered air pollutant and neurotoxin Hexane in them.

That chemical is used to help reduce the fat in veggie burgers and is not regulated or monitored by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, according to the article.

The article includes a list of brands that do and do not have hexane in them.
