How are you planning to celebrate National Coffee Day?

Good old Thomas Jefferson had it pegged when he declared coffee to be “the favorite drink of the civilized world.” Whether your drink of choice is a half-caf low-fat two-shot no-whip caramel macchiato, a single origin pour-over or just a plain old cup of joe, many of us depend on coffee to start our day. Since today is National Coffee Day, we here at AnnArbor.com have spent a little bit more time than usual thinking about java.

In the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area, we've got an embarrassing number of high-quality coffee destinations where well-trained baristas will whip up a dreamy coffee confection for you. My regular stops include Lab Cafe, Comet, Mighty Good Coffee, Roos Roast, Babo, Morgan & York, Zingerman's Coffee and The Ugly Mug.

Making coffee in your own home has become quite an art as well. My friend Liz Clayton, a former Ann Arbor resident who has gone on to become quite the international coffee doyenne, has written a series of blogs on Serious Eats about the art of brewing better coffee at home at a variety of different price points. 3 Ways to Brew Better Coffee at Home For Under $25, 3 Ways to Brew Better Coffee at Home for Under $50, and 3 Ways to Brew Better Coffee at Home for Under $500 are a few of my favorites from the series.

What about you? What's your favorite way to enjoy a damn fine cup of coffee?

That MAY be what Thomas Jefferson wrote, though I can't verify it. He did write, however, that he thought chocolate would replace both tea and coffee. Read it here: http://thomasjeffersonleadership.com/?s=coffee

I use a drip coffee maker but do more of a pour-over method with it, because it can only do good coffee in large amounts. If I try to brew only one or two cups, it's too weak. Taking the lid off the pot and letting the water soak in the grounds is messy but tastes way better.

Started my day with a mug and a splash of fresh-ground, fresh-brewed Sumatra Mandheling, made in my Timolino Ingenie. It makes a superb cup of coffee for one with a minimum of fussing. My favorite coffee drink is 'just the coffee, please'- no cream, no sugar, no foam or fancy flavors. The Coffee House Creamery on Jackson Road is my go-to place for coffee away from home- they have amazing coffee, and some great treats, too.
