Frugal Friday at Bell's Diner
Mary Bilyeu, Contributor
Bell's Diner, today's Frugal Floozie Friday feature, is a place which — as it states on its menu — invites you to "Call it your home." Very friendly, it's a great place to go for breakfast, lunch, or just to find "good, homemade food in a casual and cheerful atmosphere." It's an Ann Arbor institution.
Many, many options qualify for our mandatory $5 per person budget, and it's really hard to choose among them! But since Craig and I were there in the early afternoon, I was feeling more inclined towards lunch than towards breakfast.
Thus, I ordered the Deluxe Cheeseburger, which offered a choice of American, Cheddar, Swiss, or Jack cheese and was served with either fries or onion rings. Most places charge extra for an option other than the potatoes, but this full plate of food fell perfectly within our limit at $4.99.

Some other choices include homemade sausage gravy with a biscuit for $3.59; two large pancakes with one egg for $4.29; or a three-egg cheese omelet served with toast for $4.59.
Regular sandwiches (served with potato chips, pickles, and coleslaw) that meet our budgetary limit include the grilled cheese, the egg salad, the BLT, the hot dog, and the Coney Island. Deluxe sandwiches (served with lettuce, fries or onion rings, cole slaw, and pickles) that qualify are the grilled cheese, the egg salad, and the hot dog.
All of the regular burgers (same terms as the sandwiches, above) are great frugal options; or you can order a deluxe hamburger or cheeseburger.
One of the many great aspects of Bell's is that it serves both diner food and also Korean classics. So you can even enjoy a six-piece plate of Mandoo — "seasoned vegetables wrapped in pasta and deep fried" — with sweet and sour sauce for only $3.99.
If you just want dessert and a cup of coffee, Bell's offers fresh pie for $2.49, or enjoy it a la mode for $3.49. A hot fudge sundae also costs $3.49.
Stop by Bell's for a warm welcome, a cozy atmosphere, and great food for very inexpensive prices!

Daughter ordered eggs over easy, hash browns and toast (how cliche') - she was very happy with it, although it took a "field trip" to get catsup. She also got hot chocolate with REAL whipped cream and loved it. Wife got Belgian Waffles with strawberries and REAL whipped cream. She loved it and raved about the cream and a side of bacon. I got a western omelette and toast. The omelette was good, I prefer the kind with the egg wrapped around the stuffing, rather than mixed in, but it was very good. Service was sketchy, we had the catsup adventure plus, the bacon arrive well after the rest of the food, in fact we thought we were not going to get it. We got zero coffee refills and zero inquires if we wanted any (or how the food was for that matter). The were completely packed, with no room for any more people, so that may have played into it. Next time we go there, I will try the be bim bop. I will go back, the plusses outweighed the minuses. Total bill: $22 and some change for 3 people. Not bad, as we were not trying to be too frugal.

The bibimbop is AWESOME! And it's SO MUCH FOOD! Thanks for reminding me that I'm long overdue for a trip to Bell's Diner. Mmm...

I love Bell's. Especially the Korean food. Spicy Chicken is my standby. A Korean exchange student gave their food high marks! They are a fine option in this neighborhood!

Their breakfast is pretty bland. If you go to Bells you will be much more satisfied if you order from the Korean menu. Bi-bim-bop has an egg on it, that's breakfast-y enough for me, or order the bulgogi with an egg on top.

I haven't been there in years, now I get my Korean on at either Be Won or Seoul Garden.

I find their tuna salad to be kind of weird - I think they use sweet pickle relish, and I don't dig it. But everything else I've had there is fantastic. I go there for either the Korean or the breakfast, usually.

I miss the old Bell's. I mean it's not that it became bad or anything when ownership swapped....but it's just not quite the same....it doesn't have that old town feel anymore. Oh well....as long as stadium hardware sticks around at least. That whole west stadium area has changed so much in the past couple decades...there's hardly anything the same there anymore.
