Ann Arbor's Mani Osteria named one of the world's best new pizza places

A pizza comes out of the woodfire pizza oven at Mani Osteria in Ann Arbor.

Just a little over a year after opening at the corner of Division and E. Liberty in Ann Arbor, Mani Osteria has been racking up a steady clientele and some pretty impressive accolades. The latest comes courtesy of Food & Wine magazine, whose July issue enumerates the best new pizza places by region.

Mani makes the Best New Places in the Midwest list. Food & Wine writer Christine Quinlan points out owner Adam Baru's previous association with legendary New York restaurateur Danny Meyer, and makes mention of the restaurant's popular Farmer's Market Pizza.

The meatball ( polpetti??) pizza is definitely a wonderful plate of food...whether locally or in the wider world.

The pickled tomatoes are to die for. I could make a meal out of that.

Love Mani! Besides the pizza, I personally think they have the best calamari on the planet, certainly the best calamari I've had. Great food, great atmosphere, great staff, great management... they deserve even more accolades. (they have one of my favorite IPAs on tap as well, Founder's Double Trouble)

Hi all - I wrote the headline, and gave some thought to it. The list, compiled by Food & Wine, is of 26 of the best NEW pizza places. The list of new American restaurants is then arranged by region, while the 5 international locations are grouped together separately. I read this list as an overall best-of, not a regional contest. Food site Eater.com, which also aggregated this story, took the same perspective. The headline that site used. "Are These The Best New Pizza Places In The World?" can be found here: http://eater.com/archives/2012/06/26/are-these-the-best-new-pizza-places-in-the-world.php#more

But the "overall best-of" is not only not a 'contest' of any sort whatever, and the 'global' section was something the author gleaned from another author's travelogues, where he "searches the world for the best bottles (presumably of wine? since this is "Food and Wine" magazine?) and killer pizzas for himself". This isn't an aggregation of food critics, this is one guy's mentioning some places he's enjoyed for pizza as he looks for wines. And the other list has no context whatsoever...it may be, indeed, merely advertising for all we can tell from the Food and Wine piece. What does "compiled" mean in this instance, because there is no context at all?!

Please be more careful with your headlines. Mani's pizzas are good, but were even better when they first opened. Last few times there pizza was too salty...coming from someone who does like her salt.

Another misleading AA.com headline. The article does list some global spots. Mani's is not one of them. The qualifications of new and mid-west are cute travel mag speak enabling yet another list which won't tick off others. Of course, this misleading headline does the most injustice to Mani's who should have been compared in the local article with existing great pizza places. How does it compare to Hell Michigan's Damn Site Inn? Less headline and more content, please.

That's a very good point, actually. Does AnnArbor.com realize that they do both themselves and their subjects injustice when the reporters do this? Or is it part of the actual instruction to the staff? I would love to know, but I'm not holding out much hope that we'll find out. The endless "best of" list listing lately is bad enough. But to add to it by misrepresenting the accolade, which in this case would actually have been good to just mention casually as possible-- oh, cool, look, a national mag says Ann Arbor's very own Mani Osteria is one of the best new pizza joints in the MidWest--actually adds to the effect that nothing here can be trusted as remotely like news. Not even news-aggregator news, but more like a cross between small-town commerce bureau hype and carnival-barker. "Step right up folks, worlds best pizza here!"

"World's Best Pizza!"(who writes these headlines?!) How utterly ridiculous. Understandable I suppose in a world where self promotion, over generalization, bragging rights and just plain egotistical hubris run rampant. I can't wait for the "World's Best" breadstick, probably be found in Ann Arbor.

World's best? C'mon. It's a really really really big planet.

As much as I'd like to agree, the Midwest is not the world. So the headline is a bit hyperbolic.

I'm sorry, but does it qualify as "one of the world's best new pizza places" if, say, it made the list for "best new pizza place in Ann Arbor" lol? I mean, Ann Arbor is in "the world" right? The Food and Wine title was "best new pizza places", then broke it down by region in the US. The entry after Mani's is one that is not even opened yet. I guess the author knows for sure it'll be great?! Note that there is a regional section just for "best new" in NYC lol. Mani's owner is coming from there, isn't he, so, while I haven't been there yet I'm going to have to make it there soon!

Great - now we'll have to wait even longer for a table! But seriously, they deserve it. The pizzas are the best around. Love the Burrata & Balsamic!

Congrats to Mr. Baru! Mani Oseteria is wonderful (best restaurant in Ann Arbor, one might argue), but this accolade likely means that it will become harder still to get a table....
