Ellen DeGeneres promises 'a big day' for Ann Arbor

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Updated article: Ellen DeGeneres asking followers to go to Walgreens in Ann Arbor

Is Ellen DeGeneres coming to Ann Arbor today?

The talk-show host, comedian and actress certainly seemed to hint that on her show's Twitter account last night, writing: "If you live in Ann Arbor, Michigan and you aren't following me, I would start now, and get a good night's sleep. Tomorrow's a big day."

Just after noon today, this was added: "If you live in Ann Arbor, MI and you wanna be on my show, get a toy, and get ready."

Her talk show's website has an episode summary for today that doesn't indicate any obvious local ties, with guests Pierce Brosnan and Bethenny Frankel. The show airs at 10 a.m. weekdays on WDIV, channel 4 in Detroit.

Graeme Taylor, an Ann Arbor teenager, appeared as a guest on the show last November.

Update: Ann Arbor! You can be on my show, help a kid in need, & win big. @Walgreens. 7:30pm. It's a win win win. Wear your favorite holiday outfit. Then I better see you at @Walgreens at 2355 Jackson Ave in your favorite holiday outfit.

I was just at Walgreens. It was a madhouse! Her rep Jeannie told everyone to come back tonight as well so people wouldn't hang around all day waiting.

I think it's great that she's coming to Ann Arbor. I'm guessing she will be collecting a toy for those children in need, such as Toys for Tots.

"...Walgreens at 2355 Jackson Ave in your favorite holiday outfit." Aw nuts I'm stuck at work! I have a tacky Christmas sweater and everything.

Sounds like it'll involve donating toys?

Not sure why aa.com needed to add the part about the ann arbor teenager being on her show? Is this suppose to be a hint or something?

How fun! It's nice to hear our city will be spotlighted on the show. I have a lot of respect for Ellen as a positive role model who does a great deal of charity work. While her show is not the most ground breaking or thought provoking on television, it is uplifting, entertaining and certainly NOT stupid.

She just updated: If you live in Ann Arbor, MI and you wanna be on my show, get a toy, and get ready.

It would be awesome if she would visit the new Mott Children's Hospital!

It embarrasses me that someone in my house watches the show. I think it is garbage. A study was just released that found "stupid TV makes you stupid", and I think this would qualify.

@Siobhan: "If you dislike her so much why bother reading this article?" I said her show is stupid, not that I dislike her. I read it to determine whether I needed to avoid a particular part of A2.

There is a lot of "stupid tv" out there but Ellen isn't part of it. Shows Iike the Kardashians and Jersey Shore might make you stupider. But Ellen entertains and does a lot of good. She raises money for breast cancer awareness, hurricane and tornado victims, animal charities, and routinely gives money and other gifts like cars to needy families that have been hit hard by the economy tanking. I find all of that far from stupid. If you dislike her so much why bother reading this article?

No one wants to hear that negativity. And hey, at least the woman attempts to give back. If you want to talk about garbage TV, go beef about the Kardashians and the Real Housewives excrement that people call entertainment.

"She brightens the day for a lot of people." So does a desklamp.

She brightens the day for a lot of people. Nothing wrong with that.

Ellen is a fine and positive entertainer. That "stupid TV makes you stupid" was a study that said FAUX Snooze viewers were less informed than those who watched NO news!

Sounds like she'll be doing one of her twitter contests. She will send out a tweet telling her followers to come to a certain location where her staffers will be. Then she will usually give instructions to come back in a costume or with a song, etc. In the past she's given out gift cards and other prizes. This is generally done while she's filming a show so it wouldn't air until tomorrow at the earliest.

Yep--you're supposed to bring a toy, but she doesn't specify what kind of toy (new, used) or what will be done with it.

JustMyOpinion, Ellen actually does quite a bit of charity work. http://ellen.warnerbros.com/ellens_life/ellens_organizations/ . And she surprises deserving people on her show just about everyday with help. That seems to be an ongoing segment when I've watched.

Sounds like a great thing for people who are at home and have nothing better to do. Love to see someone run contests that help out folks who really need it, although helping anyone this time of year is nice.
