DIA reproductions to appear on streets and sidewalks of Ann Arbor this spring

By Jenn McKee

If I were to mention artworks on the streets and sidewalks of Ann Arbor, you'd automatically think I was talking about the Art Fair. But this spring, replicas of paintings and artworks usually on the walls of the Detroit Institute of Arts will find their way to Ann Arbor, courtesy of the Inside/Out program.

Inside|Out temporarily displays full-sized, high-quality reproductions of DIA paintings, placed in outdoor settings.

From April to June, seven reproductions will be installed in Ann Arbor. All the artworks will be displayed within walking distance of each other, so that people can tour all the works on foot. Maps will make the artworks easy to locate, and local activities and programs will be planned in conjunction with the display. Details about the selected artworks, locations, and events will be announced in March.

In addition, all Ann Arbor residents will have the opportunity to enjoy free admission to the DIA during the city’s Community Weekend on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21. Plus, performers from the Ann Arbor area will have the opportunity to play inside the museum on those dates.

Ann Arbor will be joining Ypsilanti as a particpant in the program; Ypsilanti hosted the program once in the past and will do so again this year.

This is the fourth year of the DIA’s Inside|Out program, and Ann Arbor will be one of 13 communities participating this spring. Additional information about the DIA program can be found at the Inside|Out Facebook page: www.facebook.com/dia.insideout.

They may have to pay for it. The Tri County area are free because they voted on this. I am not sure if anyone outside of Wayne, Macomb and Oakland are free. Might want to call ahead. Also, the Detroit Science Center is now open. They got a sponsor and are looking for more.

Not sure about the dates. The headline says March, but the article says April to June. What are the correct dates?

Thanks for catching this. As the article explains, the announcements about the works and locations will be released in March, but the works won't appear around Ann Arbor until April. I'll correct the headline now.

Pretty cool, although I imagine we will see "Gexir" or "SAES" tagged on them in no time.

I was thinking the same thing. The graffiti taggers will be out in full force.

Very cool. The DIA is a real treasure and I look forward to this display. And don't forget that the actual works, along with many more, are only 40 minutes away.

Make sure your car is in good working order. Check that tire pressure.
