Aside from the cool local angle of the University of Michigan's Michael Daugherty's works receiving five nods, the big news out of the Grammy Award nominations was the 10 nominations for Eminem. (Bruno Mars followed with seven.)

In one closely watched category, MTV.com looks at the nominees for best new artist. The Washington Post's TV columnist notes that many of the nominees are very ratings-friendly.

Billboard offers up 10 things you didn't see on TV (from the post-show interviews). And in one other note, the Carolina Chocolate Drops — who are playing the Michigan Theater on Friday — earned a nomination for best traditional folk album.

A full list of nominees is on the Grammy website.

Other entertainment news of note online today:

MUSIC

• A prayer vigil has been held in Detroit for ailing Aretha Franklin.

• Rolling Stone reports that an upcoming movie will look at the making of the Clash's "London Calling," one of the best albums ever made.

• Another new Michael Jackson song has been released.

• The Fall Metal Festival is returning to Mount Clemens.

• Apparently Jack White is tired of whining fans. Guess who I'm tired of?

MOVIES

• If you can get past the glaring error in the first paragraph (the Drifters had nothing to do with Motown), the Michigan Daily takes a look at why there aren't more downtown movie theaters in Ann Arbor. (Personally, I regularly thank the powers that be that we still have two.)

• The Arab Film Festival returns to Dearborn this weekend.

• Always on the job, The Hollywood Reporter has the raunchiest jokes from Quentin Tarantino's Friars Club roast.

TELEVISION

• This is bizarre, given its immediate success: The entire writing staff of "The Walking Dead" has been let go.

STAGE

• A Detroit Free Press review gives three stars to the Hillberry Theatre's production of "Richard III."

• The Detroit News reports on a production of "Grease" at the Fox Theatre.
