Kevin Kimbrough (Riff Raff) and Mary Elizabeth Parker (Magenta) try on costumes during rehearsal for the Chelsea Area Players' upcoming production of "The Rocky Horror Show."

It didn’t quite arrive in time for Halloween, but the Chelsea Area Players will bring their production of the spooky, stage musical campfest, “The Rocky Horror Show,” to Ann Arbor’s Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre (911 North University) on Thursday-Saturday, November 11-13, at 8 p.m.

The story focuses on a young, clean-cut couple named Brad and Janet, who have car trouble during a rainstorm and seek shelter at a castle. But this isn’t just any castle. Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a mad scientist and self-proclaimed “transvestite from Trassexual, Transylvania” acts as ringleader to a bizarre entourage there. And when Brad and Janet arrive, the inhabitants happen to be partying, because the doctor is about to unveil his latest creation: Rocky, a man-made Adonis.

“Rocky”’s story — which satirizes B-movie horror and science fiction — is familiar to many, of course, but here’s something you might not have known: The more widely-seen film, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” made in 1975, was adapted from this long-running, 1973 British stage musical, written by Richard O’Brien.

"A rock musical is a bit of a departure for the Chelsea Area Players, and although we scheduled auditions and rehearsals in Chelsea as usual, we have chosen to perform in Ann Arbor on the U-M campus to make the live stage show of this cult classic available to a wider demographic than we typically see at our more traditional summer musicals," said the show's publicist, Kathy McGuire, via e-mail.

So if you’re ready to dress up and do “The Time Warp” again with performers on a stage instead of on a screen, tickets for CAP’s production of “Rocky” are available at the Chelsea Area Players website; Chelsea Pharmacy, 1050 South Main Street in Chelsea; and (as available) at the door one hour prior to showtime.
