Blackbird Theatre reimagines 'Twelfth Night' in its next Shakespeare West production

By Jennifer Eberbach

The Blackbird Theatre’s inaugural season of Shakespeare West, an outdoor theater series, continues with a unique take on the comedy “Twelfth Night.”

Shakespeare’s shipwrecked protagonist Viola washes up on the shores of a different kind of Illyria in Shakespeare West’s version of “Twelfth Night.” In this version, she is thrown into the midst of a 1960's folk festival where “bikers, bohemians and bamboozlers whoop it up in a tropical paradise,” according to the theater’s description.

The modern reimagining, which is directed by Blackbird Theatre’s artistic director Barton Bund, is sure to be something completely different for Shakespeare fans.

In the original version of the gender-bending role, Viola takes on the persona of a male page working for Duke Orsino, and then she is thrown into a love triangle with Orsino and the woman he favors, Lady Olivia. In Shakespeare West’s version, Viola ends up taking on a Vietnam vet look.

Appearing in the play are Diviin Huff (Viola), Sean Sabo (Orsino), Marisa Dluge (Olivia) Qmara Peaches Black (Maria), Barton Bund (Malvolio), Danny Friedland (Sir Andrew Aguecheek), and Dan Johnson (Sir Toby Belch).

Performances will be held at the newly renovated bandshell at West Park (Miller and Seventh streets), at 7 p.m. on Aug. 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27.
