"Biggest Loser" episode 3: Students becoming teachers

Last week on "The Biggest Loser" (3-minute recap):

Remember the teams who were eliminated after falling short in the season premiere marathon bike-riding challenge? That's mother Cherita/daughter Victoria and father O'Neal/daughter Sunshine. The 30-day clock is ticking for them to possibly qualify to rejoin the competition — and if their workout regimens match their confident talk, the teams back at the ranch better step it up.

Meanwhile, it's student/teacher week for the hopefuls. Each team (plus James and Stephanie, whose teammates have been eliminated) assigned its members to be the student or teacher. The teachers would work one-on-one with trainers Bob and Jillian as usual, passing on their knowledge to their teammate the student, who wouldn't be allowed to see the trainers this week.

Local competitors Andrea and Darrell (also pictured: Stephanie) experienced a role reversal this week.

True to form, there was a twist: at the weigh-in, only the students' weights would count toward their respective teams; the weight lost (or gained) by the students would determine which team's members go on the chopping block this week. And in case the stakes weren't already high enough, the teams wouldn't be choosing the student/teacher assignments for their own teams — the winner of (surprise!) a temptation challenge would set those roles.

For "Biggest Loser" newbies, the temptation challenge offers the contestants a chance to put their team in a position of power — in exchange for eating high-calorie foods. In this case, the teams were tempted with countless candy-coated chocolates. Any of the hopefuls who didn't eat at least 1 were immediately out of the running, and the challenge continued until one person ate more candy than the rest. Most of the participants — including Ann Arbor resident Andrea — were loath to jeopardize their progress or possibly put a target on their team. Andrea explained that she didn't want the power that would come with winning the challenge, because she didn't want to be seen as creating drama among the competitors.

The temptation challenge ended quickly and with a whimper, as most of the competitors opted not to eat, giving mother Sherry the win and student/teacher-assigning advantage after eating just 2 candies. (With the candies just 5 calories apiece, it was a healthy victory, to boot.) True to Andrea's assessment, though, Sherry and daughter Ashley quickly regretted their position but made their picks. In the case of local hopefuls Darrell and Andrea, the daughter became the teacher, while her dad would be the student. Andrea took the responsibility seriously, noting that if Darrell failed this week it would be a reflection of her teaching.

Fortunately, Bob and Jillian gave the teachers all of the information they needed, from advice about what and when to eat, to what exercises to do and equipment to use. For example, Jillian told Andrea that Darrell should eat every 4 hours with no snacking in between. In addition to working with the trainers, the teachers met with celebrity chef Curtis Stone to learn about how to prepare nutritious foods in healthy portions.

Darrell-Episode-3-Blindfolded.JPG

Andrea coaches a blindfolded Darrell in the immunity challenge.

Students and teachers reunited for the immunity challenge, in which each teacher had to unwind 1,000 feet of ribbon. In addition to winning immunity, the top-performing team could also decide at the weigh-in to switch one team's student/teacher roles. Some teams, like white's Michael, got creative, tying the ribbon in knots and wrapping it around other teams' ribbons. Unfortunately for such endeavors, the trainers revealed that the students had to untie the ribbons, blindfolded, with only their teachers' voices and words to guide them. Ultimately, cousins Sam and Koli won immunity, sending all of the teachers into workout mode, lest their position switch at weigh-in.

At the weigh-in, immunity winners Sam and Koli opted to swap the roles of the white team, making son Michael the student and mother Maria the teacher, after Michael gave the impression of not putting in as much effort as the rest of the participants. Meanwhile, Darrell was confident that he followed Andrea's instructions but didn't know his body well enough to be able to tell whether he lost weight. Fortunately, the scale doesn't lie and there was good news: Darrell lost another 12 pounds. Add the 7 pounds Andrea lost this week and that brought their team's overall weight loss to 78 pounds. With only Darrell's weight being considered for their standing in the competition this week, team black bumped up to the third best-performing duo.

Perhaps Sam and Koli made the right call, as the white team ended up on the chopping block. Similar to last week, Maria pleaded that the competitors consider her son's dire health condition and give him a chance to continue. Once again, the hopefuls (mostly) agreed. For the sake of Michael's well-being, here's hoping this week was a wake-up call.
