"Biggest Loser" episode 7: Every man for himself

Last time on "The Biggest Loser" (3-minute recap):

After a couple of weeks off while NBC aired the 2010 Winter Olympics, "The Biggest Loser" is back. Last time, the family-based duos were split up, setting the stage for an individual-based competition from that point forward — beginning with 2 contenders going home. Melissa's weigh-in results eliminated her on the spot, while the other lowest performers of the week, local hopeful Darrell Hough and Cheryl, went into a sudden-death torch-balancing endurance test. As the previous episode ended on the challenge cliffhanger, so this week began. Cheryl and Darrell battled it out for almost 10 minutes, at which point Darrell lost his balance.

Darrell Hough's "Biggest Loser" road ends here, but his weight loss journey continues.

In a tearful goodbye, Darrell said that he let himself down by losing the challenge, but that his "Biggest Loser" experience taught him to dream big and sent him off with confidence. Indeed, having lost 75 pounds over the 6 weeks on the show, Darrell should return to Ann Arbor with his head held high. Meanwhile, Andrea interviewed that her dad has always been her biggest supporter and she's proud of him every day.

That one-on-one challenge complete, Alison informed the contenders that they'd be divided into 2 new teams, and it was temptation challenge time. Most of the competitors weren't willing to risk consuming lots of extra calories even in exchange for a big reward, so only Andrea and Michael, whose onetime parent teammate was also sent home in previous weeks, stepped up to the (literal and figurative) plate.

In a Memory-style game, Andrea and Michael sought a pair of golden tickets, giving the winner the power to select the members and trainers of the 2 new teams. Distributed among the tickets were various calorie-laden snacks, leading to the temptation-y twist: when 1 competitor made a match, the other had to eat the corresponding food item; if a competitor uncovered a previously-unrevealed item on the first part of their turn but failed to recall where its mate was, they had to eat it. Andrea excelled at the memory portion, uncovering pair after pair and passing on more than 2,300 calories' worth of snacks to Michael. Michael was less successful on the matching side, giving Andrea a little over 1,000 in temptation fallout. But what really mattered here was finding those golden tickets and getting to control the next phase of the competition, which Michael ultimately accomplished.

Michael's team selections:

• Black team (with trainer Jillian): Andrea, Ashley, Cheryl, Sam, Stephanie, Sherry • Blue team (with trainer Bob): Daris, Koli, Lance, Michael, Miggy, Sunshine

Sensing a theme here? In a strategic move, Michael put most of the strongest competitors (and himself) on the blue team. O'Neal was odd man out, giving him immunity for the week (and his third in a row), after which point he'd join the week's losing team. Jillian couldn't hide her displeasure at Michael's choices, but fortunately for him he'd be training with Bob. A much-needed morale boost arrived in the next challenge, in which the hopefuls raced to raise a flag to the top of a tall building for a chance to receive letters from loved ones back home. Team blue prevailed, perhaps giving them momentum into the last-chance workout, perhaps inspiring team black to push even harder.

At the weigh-in, Michael set a "Biggest Loser" record for the most weight lost after 7 weeks of competition: 109 pounds. All told, his team (blue) shed 48 pounds (2.7%) this week. But it was glory for the underdogs of team black, who lost 41 pounds (2.82%), with Andrea contributing a loss of 5 pounds. This being first elimination round in the individual-based phase of the competition, no one was eager to admit they performed particularly poorly. But at the elimination ceremony, various reasons (team morale, skill level at challenges, good support at home, etc.) led to team blue voting off the tenacious Miggy.

Darrell's post-show follow-up found him another 48 pounds lighter (bringing his cumulative weight loss to 123 pounds), slimming down to 290 pounds. But while he's lost weight, Darrell gained other things: a new perspective on life and a healthier, more dynamic lifestyle to enjoy with his family. Darrell's next goal is to weigh 200 pounds by season's end. In the meantime, here's hoping Andrea's success in the competition continues, further motivating her father's journey back home.

Agreed, Newbster. Unfortunately, as of 11 pm yesterday, the newest "Biggest Loser" photos provided by the NBC Universal press web site were from the previous episode. This post will be updated with a newer photo as soon as NBC makes it available.

Would've been nice if you had shown a current picture of Darrel in this article.

Nice going Darrell and Drea. I've enjoyed the local ties to this show and have personally dropped 45 lbs. myself. Best of luck to you both!
