Best Bets: From classic film to books, there's more than Valentine's Day going on this week

FILM

“Martin Bandyke's Moving Pictures” series continues at the Michigan Theater on Monday. 7 p.m. This 13-week film series curated by Bandyke features a selection of music-oriented films. This week, see “I am Trying to Break Your Heart,” the documentary about Wilco recording "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." $10/ general admission; $8/students, seniors and children under 12. The band Solas will play its blend of Celtic traditional music, folk and country melodies Tuesday night at the Ark in downtown Ann Arbor.

On Monday, go on "speed dates" with local writers during the "How I Write series: Writers We Love" at the North Quad. 7 to 8 p.m. Get time for focused conversation with the event's guests (professors, graduate students, etc.). Each of the guests will have their own table, and clusters of attendees will make their way to chat with them for a few minutes at a time. It's meant to be light-hearted and celebratory. Free. MARKET

Mix of Ypsilanti will host “Mix Marketplace” on Saturdays and Tuesdays, Jan. 14 through April 28. Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be live music, a coffee bar, street cart food vendors, and a rotating collection of vendors selling a wide variety of foods and handmade goods. See the film with one of the hottest make-out scenes in cinema, "From Here to Eternity" on Tuesday at the Michigan Theater. 7 p.m. The film is set in Hawaii in the months leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Starring Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Ernest Borgnine, Deborah Kerr and Donna Reed. $10/ general admission; $8/students, seniors and children under 12. The Michigan is at 603 E. MUSIC

Looking for a fun way to spend a date (or pretend that it's a better holiday, like St. Patrick's Day)? Then head to the Ark to hear Solas on Tuesday. 8 p.m. They play a blend of Celtic traditional music, folk and country melodies, bluesy, sometimes jazz-inspired improvisations, and global rhythms. $17.50. Spend "An Evening with Nicholas Delbanco" at Nicola's Books on Wednesday. 7 p.m. He will discuss the paperback release of his latest non-fiction book, "Lastingness" and for the release of the Sherbrookes trilogy, now collected into one volume.
