Beavis and Butthead return to TV; Paltrow brokers peace between 'Glee' and Kings of Leon; Britney's new video; and more

New episodes of the cult classic animated series “Beavis and Butthead” appear to be headed for MTV, and the caffeinated slackers will add “Jersey Shore,” UFC matches, and YouTube videos to their television viewing. It’s so odd that shows about other people watching (and commenting on) shows became such a pervasive trend at some point …

MOVIES

* Jeff Daniels, Chelsea’s resident movie and Broadway star, and the Purple Rose Theatre’s founder and executive director, has spoken out against Governor Rick Snyder’s recently announced budget proposal, which would cut the state’s generous tax incentive package for filmmakers.

* Beck’s music is popping up in several recent movies, the latest being “I Am Number Four,” to which he contributes a song called “Curfew.”

TELEVISION

* Gwyneth Paltrow has apparently brokered peace between “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy and the Kings of Leon, who had refused to grant the hit show rights to cover its songs. (Someone’s not accustomed to being told “no,” it would appear.) Now play nice, boys.

* Kiefer Sutherland may be back on TV in a series this fall.

THEATER

* A new play about legendary Tigers announcer Ernie Harwell, written by Mitch Albom, will premiere at Detroit's City Theatre on April 28. Will Young is slated to star in the show, and Tony Caselli will direct.

* The playwright behind the new Broadway play “Lombardi,” Eric Simonson, is moving his creative focus to the hardwood, working on a play called “Magic/Bird,” about the longtime rivalry between former Lakers superstar Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Celtics legend Larry Bird. Can't say it's been done before, I guess.

* Curious about the new opera that focuses on Anna Nicole Smith that’s now premiering in London? You’re in luck. The BBC News website has a round-up of reviews. You’re welcome.

MUSIC

* EW.com offers this overview of fans’ reception of Britney Spears’ highly anticipated, brand spankin’ new video for “Hold It Against Me.” Check it out for yourself below.

* Wiz Khalifa, who’s coming to Eastern Michigan University on April 4, just dropped his “Cabin Fever” mixtape online, and you can download it for free.

* Billboard announced plans to bring its award show back to TV on May 22. Well, hallelujah. If there’s one thing we all suffer from, it’s not enough entertainment award shows on television. Am I right, people?

* Former “American Idol” contestant Crystal Bowersox has scheduled a concert at Monroe County Community College on April 2.

* Tragic news about touring family music act The 5 Browns, who received national attention because all five siblings earned a place at Julliard’s prestigious music school: the siblings’ father has confessed to sexually abusing his three daughters when they were children.

* The Grammy-nominated Carolina Chocolate Drops, who have been well-received on previous visits to Ann Arbor, recently announced that they have added two new musicians to replace founding member Justin Robinson, who’s reportedly departed “to take up new challenges” - just days before the Grammy Awards. Hmm.

* Bob Seger concert dates are being announced, but so far, no visits to Detroit or Ann Arbor have are planned. We’re keeping a close watch on this one.

RADIO

* Three Detroit-based radio stations have been sold: WJR-AM (760), WDVD-FM (96.3) and WDRQ-FM (93.1).
