University of Michigan Ballroom Dance Team hosts upcoming competition
This past fall, U-M’s team — which is 10 years old — won its 5th consecutive championship at the National Collegiate Team Championship in Columbus, Ohio; and with a membership level that fluctuates between 160-200 members, the team will be well-represented in its own competition for collegiate and amateur ballroom dancers from all over the Midwest.
"It’s a smaller scale competition than the one we competed in in November,” said UMBDT public relations chair Daniel Lian, a U-M junior studying business. “We usually get between 250-300 dancers from colleges around the Midwest — Purdue, OSU, Wisconsin, Indiana and places like that are primarily where our competitors coming from.”
UMBDT’s competition runs all day — 8 a.m.-10 p.m. — on February 13; and while patrons are welcome to come at any time to watch, premier events will be on offer in the evening, beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets for a day pass cost $10 ($5 for students); admission for the evening program costs $8, while kids K-12 are free.
“For every single dance, we give ribbons out to top six dancers,” said Lian. “On top of that, we’re going to do individual couple awards and team awards. We’re looking to provide some scholarships for couples, or even a team.”
And in the world of ballroom dance team competition, “everybody counts,” said Lian. “It’s not just the top level dancers winning for the team.”
