In anticipation of Ann Arbor Civic Theatre’s Junior Theatre production of an original adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic book, "Anne of Green Gables" in May (at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens), two events are scheduled. The first is a book discussion group on Sunday, January 27 from 1-3 p.m. at Nicola’s Bookstore in the Westgate Mall. The second is a scriptwriting workshop on Sunday, February 3 from 1-3 p.m. at the downtown Ann Arbor District Library’s multi-purpose room.

Both events are free, open to youth in grades 4-12, and pre-registration is not required. The events are hosted by the director and adaptor of the play, Jacqueline Courteau.

"The Anne of Green Gables" book club on January 27 will give readers the opportunity to discuss the book’s themes, characters, and images. Director/adaptor Courteau will also discuss the process of adapting a book into a play. Those attending should have read most, if not all, of the book before the book club workshop.

In the "Anne of Green Gables" scriptwriting workshop on February 3, attendees will explore the process of adapting the classic book into the play that will be staged in May. Topics covered include how to introduce characters, set the stage, and start the plot in motion. Those attending will help write the opening scene of the play. Familiarity with the book - especially the first three chapters - is essential.
