Friends and family of the late Andy Kotowicz, an Ann Arbor native whose love of music grew into a successful career in the record business, are organizing memorials in his honor.

A local memorial service, an online benefit auction and a pair of special concerts — in Ypsilanti and Seattle — are all in the works. Kotowicz, 37, died in an auto accident last month in Seattle, where he lived.

Kotwicz grew up in Ann Arbor, graduating from Huron High School in 1991.

His longtime love of music led him into the record business, eventually becoming vice president of sales and director of marketing for Sub Pop, the famous Seattle-based indie label.

Survivors and more information are detailed in his online obituary.

Family and friends plan to gather Tuesday, November 23 for the 12:10 p.m. Mass at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 530 Elizabeth St. in Ann Arbor. Following the Mass, they will receive guests in the Hussey Room at the University of Michigan League, 911 N. University Ave., between 1 and 3 p.m.

Sub Pop has organized a couple of efforts to benefit the Andy Kotowicz Family Foundation, which aids his immediate family. Direct donations may be sent to Andy Kotowicz Family Foundation, Sub Pop Records, 2031 Fourth Ave., 3rd Floor, Seattle WA, 98121.

Sub Pop has set up an online auction of celebrity memorabilia — including an autographed Pearl Jam guitar and several other items — through CharityBuzz.com. Proceeds benefit the foundation.

The company also plans a benefit concert in Seattle on Dec. 4. at Showbox at the Market featuring the bands that Kotowicz personally represented: Wolf Eyes, Michael Yonkers, Vetiver, Fruit Bats, Shabazz Palaces, A-Frames/AFCGT and Mudhoney.

Finally, a local benefit memorial concert has been scheduled for Dec. 8, Kotowicz's birthday, at the Savoy, 23 N. Washington St. in Ypsilanti. Details and a full band lineup are still in development, but confirmed performers include Rogue Satellites, Swimsuit and Powerteam. Watch AnnArbor.com or Savoy's website for more information.
