Conan O'Brien leaves Friday; Sundance opens today; Gorillaz in March; and more

Conan O'Brien's last day on "The Tonight Show" will be Friday, The New York Times and others are reporting.

Jay Leno returns to his old slot March 1. Conan's final guests will be Tom Hanks and Will Ferrell, according to EW.com.

Adam Sandler was a guest last night, and recalled his own firing from NBC. (And note that one comment gets a deserved bleep, but it's obvious what he's saying.)

MOVIES:

• The Sundance Film Festival gets under way today in Park City, Utah, with a couple of strong local connections. One movie screening at the festival is "Bilal's Stand," made by University of Michigan graduate Sultan Sharrief. AnnArbor.com has a story today on the movie, which screens at the Michigan Theater on Jan. 31, and the Detroit Free Press has a feature as well. And don't forget the special Sundance screening of "Cyrus" at the Michigan next week. Meanwhile, YouTube is offering rentals for five Sundance movies.

• The short list has been announced for the Oscar for best foreign language film.

• The Detroit News has a story on the new western starring Insane Clown Posse.

TELEVISION:

Viewership is improving for "The Biggest Loser," EW.com reports. If you missed it, here's Chrysta Cherrie's recap of the latest episode for AnnArbor.com.

• Not surprising, given its difficulties, NBC is stocking up on episodes of scripted series.

Emeril Lagasse will host a new talk show on the Ion network.

David Hasselhoff will star in a reality series on A&E.

Beyonce has joined the lineup of Friday's "Hope for Haiti" event.

• People.com has a recap of last night's "American Idol" audition show.

Steve Harvey is taking over as host of "Family Feud."

MUSIC:

• Rachel May's local music column in the Detroit Free Press has an item about the new EP from local favorites Gorevette. A record-release party is planned in Ann Arbor, but details are not yet set.

Vampire Weekend's "Contra" has debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts, only the 12th independently distributed album to do this since 1991.

Gorillaz will have a new album out in March, and there's a single up on YouTube — featuring Bobby Womack and Mos Def.

Detroit Rocks for Haiti is among musical benefits set in the area, the Free Press reports.

Korn and Rob Zombie will headline this summer's Mayhem Tour.

STAGE

• As you may have seen from the preview on AnnArbor.com, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Co. performs at the Power Center this weekend. Today there are additional preview stories from The MIchigan Daily here and The Detroit News here.

• Among the "Best Bets" in the Free Press today: A sculpture show at Pewabic Pottery in Detroit.

BOOKS: The late Robert B. Parker was working on a new novel featuring his character Spenser, EW.com reports. Parker's death earlier this week is the jumping off point for Jeff Kass' latest "From the Front of the Room" blog entry on AnnArbor.com.

• The Associated Press reviews Patti Smith's new Robert Mapplethorpe memoir, "Just Kids."

GAMES:

• Sony has announced a delay in the release of the new motion controller for PlayStation 3.

• A new study links brain size and video games.
