By Melanie Maxwell

The area of downtown around Ann Street and Fourth Avenue is celebrating its heritage today with the return of the African American Downtown Festival.

The festival celebrates African American history and culture, and is located in the area of Ann Arbor's historic black business district.

The event runs until 9 p.m. tonight. Photographer Melanie Maxwell captured these images:

Thank you Melanie for capturing joy and engagement at yesterday's historic African American Downtown Festival. It does disturb me that over 70% of reader's comments were unsuitable according to comment guidelines.

"It does disturb me that over 70% of reader's comments were unsuitable..." That may or may not mean anything "sinister" around here. This place has a storied history of deleting comments often for mysterious reasons. Recently I had a comment deleted when all did was quote from the body of the story and the commenter guidelines. In fairness to AA.com I complained and they "undeleted" me. But if I hadn't squawked it would have remained deleted. Many of us here have scratched our heads both privately and publicly on what often seems to be an itchy trigger finger on the delete button.

I'm sad I missed it - last year it was a fantastic time!
