Starting this weekend, the locally based, nationally recognized artist Chris Roberts-Antieau opens a "pop-up" gallery in downtown Ann Arbor.

Located in a vacant storefront at 211 S. Fourth Ave., the temporary Antieau Gallery — sharing the name with her more permanent outlet in New Orleans — plans an opening from 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10. The gallery will be open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. every day through Dec. 1.

Based in the Manchester area, Roberts-Antieau is known for "fabric paintings" in hand-painted frames, many of which show a whimsical or humorous edge. Her work has developed a national profile over the last few years. Last year, she became the subject of a documentary movie. And earlier this year, former president Bill Clinton bought some of her work in New Orleans.

As the announcement says, "Pop-up galleries began gaining popularity years ago in New York and have proven to be mutually beneficial for artists, landlords and communities as a whole. Artists are able to occupy vacant spaces for little to no rent, display their art, and bring culture and life to a community, revitalizing entire areas of town. Antieau has visions of creating a 'gallery row' in Ann Arbor and is optimistic that this pop-up gallery will generate the energy and support needed to not only allow Antieau to create a permanent gallery space in Ann Arbor, but will attract other artists to do the same."

The Antieau Gallery is in the same block as the highly regarded Gallery Project. According to the announcement of the new venture, Roberts-Antieau's New Orleans gallery itself began as a "pop-up" effort.

Locally, Roberts-Antieau has been part of the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair for more than 20 years. For examples of her work and more information, check out her website, and follow her on Facebook.

That's the great thing about ART... different artists speak to different personalities. Congrats and thanks to Chris for bringing more art to our world and the neighbohood.

Personally I don't care for her kitschy and overdone assembly-line work.

I like this very much and will stop by to visit the pop-up gallery of Chris Roberts-Antieau. That is definitely adding art to this community. I like private enterprise.
