Tuffy Auto on West Stadium in Ann Arbor closes; property up for lease
Lizzy Alfs | AnnArbor.com
The auto shop, which closed in recent weeks, occupied the 3,680-square-foot building at 2405 W. Stadium Blvd. for over a decade.
The property is listed by Jim Chaconas of Colliers International. It's owned by Gerald Smith of Dexter, according to city records.
Colliers agent Brendan Cavender said there are already several people interested in the space.
“We’ve had interest from both local automotive shops and ones located in other parts of Michigan,” Cavender said. “They’ve been attracted to the excellent visibility on Stadium, along with it being centrally located in Ann Arbor.”
Randy McNutt, owner of this Tuffy Auto, declined to comment on the business closing.
The next closest Tuffy Auto Service Centers are in Ypsilanti and Plymouth, with one each.

Good riddance This place was a total rip off. They gave free estimates, but if you wanted a copy of the free estimate for your records or to show them when you returned. It was $35.00. McNutt hey,I wonder if he was related to the Mc Nutt of ok auto fame in the 60's

Same story here. I called them a few weeks ago, when I determined my flex pipe on my car was starting to leak. I know it is about a 60 to 80 dollar job, but when I called Tuffy to see if they could fit me in on a lunch hour, the manager told me it was a three hour job, and would cost a few hundred dollars. Being a lifelong car hobbyist, I knew he was full of it, so on my day off, I drove to Larry"s muffler in Adrian. 80 Dollars, and about 15 minutes later, they had my car back in the parking lot, and ready to go. The biggest problem that repair shops always have, are that they assume they are smarter than the customer. Once they assume that attitude, they are out of business. That really goes for any business.

This is an example of customer service. I used to take all my vehicles here for service, when Paul managed. He was honest and would only charge me if something was truly needed. Back then this place was always packed with people getting there car serviced. Then Randy took over, and when I went for service he insisted that i pay for diagnostics before he would consider looking at what I wanted to looked at. He was interested in bilking every dime he could out of me, instead of just looking at the thousands of dollars I had already spent at this place with Paul. So I found the guys at Select Auto and have been using them ever since. Been about 3 years I suppose.

It could be a matter of Michigan state law. Heavy fines if you replace a part thats not broken, most shops will require a diagnostic by themselves rather than risk a customer or another shops diag. Paul may have been putting the cost of diag. combined with the actual repair since he knew you. Nobody does diagnostics for free.

"...along with it being centrally located in Ann Arbor." Huh? Seems to be a bit of a geographic confusion in this statement.
