Tim Hortons site plans on Ann Arbor City Council's agenda Monday night

By Lizzy Alfs

Ann Arbor City Council will consider a request from Tim Hortons to build a restaurant at the site of the former Enzo’s Sports Bar on South State Street at its meeting Monday night.

The site plan, which was submitted in September 2011, calls to demolish the existing 9,558-square-foot building and construct a 1,953-square-foot Tim Hortons drive-through, with both interior and exterior seating for dining.

Tim Hortons, whose standard store is seen above, submitted plans to build a new store near the corner of State and Ellsworth.

Plans include a parking lot with 21 parking spaces and four bicycle hoops. The plans will leave the property owner, First Martin Corporation, with room to build a second retail building on the site.

The plans went to the Ann Arbor Planning Commission in early March and staff is recommending approval.

Tim Hortons also has announced plans to open a store in Maple Village on the site of the former Golden Chef Restaurant, which was destroyed by fire in 2006. Site plans for that location have not been submitted to the city yet.

Eric Ramsey, real estate manager for Tim Hortons, said in a previous report the company is choosing from franchise applicants to operate the stores.

The Oakville, Ontario-based chain has more than 3,800 stores, including stores on Michigan Avenue in Ypsilanti Township and Michigan Avenue in Saline.

That Enzo's building is an eye sore. HURRY. Now, if we can get rid of that flower place at the corner....

Agreed! Surprisingly, the flower shop does open for a short period of time in the Spring.

Timmy's is great but for my $ nothing is better than a fresh Krispy Kreme doughnut right off the line.

I'm pretty sure that location is in Pittsfield Township (like Costco near by). What jurisdiction does Ann Arbor City Council have...?

It's on the very edge of the A2 city limits. South of Ellsworth and West of State in this area is Pittsfield.

I won't use the location by Costco but a couple times a year. However I will be a regular at the one in Maple Village Center. That old chinese restaurant needs to be torn down and the front corner of that shopping center utilized by a responsible tenant. Hurry up with the Maple location!

Funny that city council's discussion of site plans for a donut shop are worthy of advance notice by annarbor.com, while their meeting about major alterations to one of the busiest roads in town was not. Does the editor just spin the wheel-o-publishing to decide what makes it onto the site?

Tim Horton's is nice, but I'd much rather go to Benny's Bakery for donuts

Benny's donuts are like heaven, if heaven were coated in a tasty glaze.

I'll keep buying the best donuts from a local business called Dom Bakery. They have a drive thru, are open 24 hours, and have the best donuts. But the sheep can go to TH, that's more for me at the QUALITY places.

Dom's donuts are OK, but they're not worth driving from the west side of town to a section of Ypsi where even the Dollar Store can't stay open. Now, Benny's Bakery (in Saline) makes a donut worth driving for.

My goodness. Not everyone who lives on the west side of town and doesn't want to drive 15 minutes to get a donut is a "sheep."

@David Paris, from what I hear, Washtenaw Dairy has great donuts, too. I'm not a fan, myself. But my family and coworkers love them. (I'd rather have garlic bread any day over donuts....)

Ya know, I just heard someone last week say that Dom's has really good doughnuts. I'm not a doughnut aficionado, but it's good to know!

With Costco going in, I'm not sure it will survive but then again, I know people who really like Tim Horton's and since they pulled out of the Wendy's on Boardwalk, this might be a good thing. What does the environment have to do with donuts?

SMC

Mon, Apr 16, 2012 : 4:42 a.m.

Yes, I can see where it would be a bad idea to have two stores selling the same goods in such close proximity... Oh wait, Tim Horton's doesn't sell giant cans of tuna and mayonnaise by the drum. They primarily sell coffee and donuts, which are two things that Costco shoppers are likely to eat on Saturday morning, right before they go shopping at Costco.

What does the environment have to do with donuts? It's elementary, my dear Momma G; Donuts go well with Tea Parties, and the environment does not!

The Costco is the best reason to approve TH's. That will really get that corner hoppin'!

Why would Costco take business away from Tim Horton's? Are Costco's donuts that good?

Lets see if they can build ay Maple Village BEFORE the building rots!

You also have plum market with zingermans pastries. No need to hold out for TH. I've also heard Dimo's might have donuts as well.

Barzoom, The best donuts in town are at the Washtenaw Dairy.
