The Speedway on the corner of Maple and Miller, pictured here in early May, is set to open on May 23.

Construction work is wrapping up on Ann Arbor’s new Speedway gas station, which is set to open Thursday on the northeast corner of the Maple and Miller intersection.

The station and convenience store will open at 10 a.m. on May 23, said Sid Barth, communications manager for Marathon Petroleum Corporation, via email.

The 1.4-acre site at 1300 N. Maple Rd. most recently was occupied by a 1,365-square-foot former Marathon gas station. City records show the property is owned by Speedway LLC and has an assessed value of $305,600.

During the past several months, the vacant structure on the site was demolished and a 3,968-square-foot, single-story gas station and convenience store was constructed in its place. A 28-foot-by-121-foot canopy covers the gas pumps.

Ohio-based Speedway LLC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Marathon Petroleum Company, and all Speedway locations are corporately operated, Barth said.

There are seven Speedway locations in Washtenaw County. There is a location a few miles south of the Maple and Miller intersection on West Stadium Boulevard.

The gas station wasn't open yet when I stopped by this morning (Thurs) at 9:30am. Workers said maybe later today...

No auto repairs like the former Marathon station did? I'll never forget that good car battery service that Marathon did at that location.

No Speedway that I'm aware of offers repairs. Gas, coffee & go.

I hate the canopy. Why does it have to be so big? This is a neighborhood gas station, not a truck stop.

I also think they are planning on pulling a good bit of freeway traffic.

Maybe you like pumping gas in he pouring rain....?

The other Speedway gas stations I've used all have more than six pumps; I don't remember the old Marathon station at this location having more than four pumps. Back in the late seventies, we ourselves or gas station attendants had to pump gas in the pouring rain sometimes, since no gas stations had canopies back then. If attendants pumped gas, we still had to open our driver window to pay them, pouring rain or not.

This gas station is a welcomed addition to the hood. My only concern is that with Miller being under construction it might be a while before sales max out.

This Speedway location might earn appearances on annarborgasprices.com. The other Speedway stations around here already regularly appear there, whether for low prices or high prices.

Being able to get gas before entering M-14 west or North will be a big plus.

I bet the majority of the traffic that normally passes that intersection are running along Maple anyway so I doubt the miller construction will affect the business if at all.

3 cars 400+K miles and not even a ping, no oil consumption other than what is considered normal and another 13 year old E320 MB that has to go every of year for a smog test in California and passes. What gives with cheap gas? I'll continue to save and you can buy at Citco at a premium.

lol I read that article about myths. They don't understand modern engines at all when it comes to octane in fuel. Nearly all modern engines have what is called a "knock sensor" in it. What this does is back off your ignition timing when predetonation occurs. Guess what happens to your car when it does that? It produces less power and uses more fuel. Higher octane fuel will resist predet bet, thus allowing yoru engine to advance it's timing...thus producing more power and better fuel economy. Now to be fair....on a 14 gallon tank that you averages 25mpg on with regular grade....you might get like 25.8mpg by switching to premium, and maybe something like an additional 5hp from the advanced timing on a stock engine. Now the affect you might feel on your buttdyno from putting premium in your car....that might be noticeable.

MAN did that spring up fast. I drive past there every other day or so and all of a sudden it was just there. Then last night as I went by I it looked like everything outside was done and they were just finishing up the interior. I think they were even stocking up the shelves last night. See THAT is how construction is supposed to be done. Fast and efficiently. Maybe we could get this same crew to work on our roads too?

An area business owner told me the one building has been empty because the son of the owner passed away. The building was a legacy from the father to the son.

"I have heard the owner is quite fickle and hard to work with." If that's the case, then he can continue to pay taxes on empty commercial property. I wouldn't want to rent from a difficult landlord either.

A specialty wine shop was supposed to open in the redeveloped building on the southwest corner, but I believe that fell through. http://www.annarbor.com/business-review/specialty-wine-shop-and-subway-under-construction-on-ann-arbors-north-maple-road/ As for the planned Subway, not sure when/if that will open, but I'm going to try and reach out to the franchise owner today for an update.

Billy

Only to close shortly. It's on the wrong corner to increase business via location, I think that's part of the reason it never got developed by anyone. A specialty shop would do good there, something that's business will rely on people coming to you directly, not people driving by.
