Scio Township officials to decide Tuesday on rezoning request for Menards store on Jackson Road
Menard Inc. faces its biggest hurdle Tuesday night in its plans to build a home improvement store on Jackson Road in Scio Township.
To build the 160,000-square-foot store at the intersection of Jackson and Staebler roads just west of Ann Arbor, the Wisconsin-based company is requesting to rezone a 62-acre site — known as the former Farmer Grant land — to general commercial.

Scio Township Planning Commission recommended approval of the request at its May 14 meeting, and the township’s Board of Trustees is set to vote on the request tonight.
Menards is under contract to purchase the site from Mel Vanderbrug and Don Colone, operating as Scio Properties LLC.
Tom O’Neil, a representative for Menards, said if the rezoning request is approved, the company plans to open the store in late 2013 or early 2014.
He said the store — which is still in the preliminary planning stages — would only account for about 18 to 20 acres of the site, leaving room for additional smaller development projects.
Menards has 262 locations in 13 states, including nine locations in Michigan. The company is in various stages of planning and development for stores in Warren, Livonia and Kalamazoo County.

Costco didn't receive approval a few years back by Scio Township. If Menards doesn't get approval I'm sure Pittsfield Township can find some land for them.

Pittsfield already turned them down.

It seems like the A2.com is trying to make drama where there is none. Why not "Scio Twp. welcomes another business". But that would be to positive.

Scio didn't welcome Costco a couple years ago.

"...faces its biggest hurdle Tuesday night in its plans to build a home improvement store on Jackson Road in Scio Township"?? Why would that be when you previously reported this quote: "Scio Township Supervisor Spaulding Clark told AnnArbor.com he doesn't anticipate any issues with the rezoning request. It will return to the Board of Trustees at its June 26 meeting." Why the 'false drama' in the lede ?

My point was, the approval is expected without a hitch--according to the previous story. Something you wouldn't know from today's piece. Only that it 'faces it biggest hurdle'. That was my point about potential 'drama'.

@Alan Goldsmith: It's not meant to be false drama. I just meant that tonight determines whether or not the plans will move forward. If the request is rejected, Menards will have to look elsewhere. But, yes, officials have said they don't anticipate any issues.
