Powerhouse Gym in Saline tells customers it will reopen this week with new equipment

By Paula Gardner

Update at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday:  A new sign on the door now says the gym will open Wednesday.

Saline’s Powerhouse Gym is expected to reopen Tuesday, days after the facility closed with little notice.

At issue was equipment replacement in the gym, located in The Oaks retail center on the east side of the city, according to a posting on the door and others associated with the business.

The gym remained closed on Tuesday.

Paula Gardner | AnnArbor.com“The owner has swapped out some equipment,” said Kelly Kizer, a fitness consultant at the Ypsilanti Township Powerhouse Gym.

Kizer said a lease agreement for fitness equipment was too costly for the owner to continue on an ongoing basis, so “she had to do this to stay open.”

Information on the ownership was unavailable Tuesday. Kizer described the Saline gym as independently owned; Washtenaw County showed no records for the gym under the Powerhouse name.

Bela Sipos of the Charles Reinhart Co., who represents the leasing of the building, said the lease for the gym was made with Powerhouse Gym corporate officials.

Sipos said employees were onsite at the facility on Monday, preparing for the gym to reopen.

“They’ve said they’d open as soon as the equipment is set up,” Sipos said.

A sign on the door said that was expected on Tuesday, though Kizer said it could be Wednesday before members can return.

Members have been directed to use the Ypsilanti Township outlet, located near I-94 and South Huron Street, until Saline’s Powerhouse reopens.

Powerhouse Gym operates 42 gyms in Michigan, according to its website. It also has facilities in 31 states.

my 2 daughters, worked for the gym and were temporarily "laid off" during this closure you spoke about in this story. They have not gotten paid since then. The gym issued paychecks that bounced and they will not give then their pay. Almost all the employees quit, because they found out how dishonest the company & the owner is. They will not pay these employees nor will they take their phone calls. They have also been telling the clients hat they got rid of everyone for stealing which is a complete fabrication. The owner has admitted that this gym will most likely go under in just a few months. I'm sure they will leave the other employees (working now) penniless too. Oh, by the way, they just opened two new gyms.

So Bela is involved with Saline Powerhouse's lease. I know him from Bally Briarwood. I've been a member there for almost 27 years and like our new Freemotion equipment. There were two orientation events for the new equipment, and we were free to ask questions about using the new machines. The old ones had tape with "Sold" or a high school's name written on those tape strips, so we knew that sooner or later, those machines would be gone. Orientation meetings for members of any gym would help in member satisfaction with any new machines, both aerobic and strength training.
