From new hires and promotions to industry awards, here's a roundup of achievements by businesses and individuals in the greater Ann Arbor area:

• Cheryl L. Chandler, an attorney and shareholder with Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge, was nominated and elected as a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Membership is by invitation only, and members must possess high personal character and an honorable reputation. ABOTA’s mission is to improve the ethical and technical standards of practice in the field of advocacy. Cheryl defends physicians and health care entities in medical malpractice cases involving all areas of medicine. Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge has offices in Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids and Traverse City.

• Inter-State Studio, a family-owned school photography company promoted Eric Harcourt of Saline from regional sales manager to director of sales, effective July 1. Harcourt served as regional sales manager since joining Inter-State in 2006, with additional responsibility for sales training added in 2007.

• Sophia Guevara, Ann Arbor resident and chair of the Consortium of Foundation Libraries, is the 2012 awardee of SLA's Diversity and Leadership Development Program conference stipend. The program awards one candidate a $1,000 stipend to attend the SLA Annual Conference and INFO-EXPO, this year held July 15-18 in Chicago.The DLDP Award recognizes the potential for leadership in individuals from backgrounds that are typically under-represented or unique within SLA, its governance, and the information profession. Recipients must have been a member of SLA for at least one year and have between three and 10 years of professional library and information experience. Guevara is past president of the SLA Michigan Chapter and also its diversity chair, working to expand the chapter's presence in Detroit and surrounding suburbs.

• Eastern Michigan University is one of the best colleges in the Midwest for the 10th consecutive year and a “great value” in terms of its tuition and education, according to the education services company The Princeton Review. Eastern was selected as one of 153 institutions by The Review in its "Best in the Midwest" section of its website feature "2013 Best Colleges: Region by Region" on PrincetonReview.com. The Princeton Review bases its selections on a school's academic programs and on student responses on an 80-question survey.

• MidMichigan Health, based in Midland, and the University of Michigan Health System have announced plans to affiliate as clinical and business partners. When complete, this will be the first such affiliation outside Southeast Michigan by UMHS. Final details about the proposed affiliation are expected to be worked out during the next few months.

• Law firm Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione recently announced that Robert D. Shereda and Nicholas J. Angelocci have joined the Ann Arbor office, and Jon H. Beaupré, a shareholder in the firm, has transferred to Ann Arbor from Brinks’ Chicago office.Beaupré's practice focuses on litigation in U.S. District Courts and the International Trade Commission. Shereda is a scientific adviser in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical chemical practice groups at Brinks and prepares and prosecutes patent applications. Nicholas Angelocci focuses his practice on patent prosecution and litigation in the mechanical arts.

• Officials from Ann Arbor-based Domino's Pizza announced Aug. 27 that the company has joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership, a collaboration between U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and industry that provides a framework to assess the environmental effects and energy efficiency of goods movement supply chains. Developed jointly in early 2003 by EPA and charter partners represented by industry stakeholders, environmental groups, American Trucking Associations and Business for Social Responsibility, the program was launched in 2004. Partners use SmartWay tools and approaches to track and reduce emissions and fuel use from goods movement.

• ForeSee, an Ann Arbor firm offering customer experience analytics, announced Aug. 27 that it has joined the Customer Experience Professionals Association, a global industry trade group.

• Campfire Interactive Inc., an Ann Arbor-based software company, was named to the Supply & Demand Chain Executive100 in the magazine's 11th annual listing.

• A new venture start-up business training class for veterans will be offered for free starting Oct. 13 at Eastern Michigan University's Livonia campus, a joint project between the Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center and EMU. Working in conjunction with VetBizCentral, the New Venture program will be aimed at aspiring and early stage entrepreneurs through the 10-week business development class. Veterans who have interest in the program can apply online or by calling 734-487-0355. Normal $700 program costs have been waived for qualifying veterans.
