The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:

• Bonnie R. Shaw, an attorney in the in the Ann Arbor office of the law firm Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, was named to a one-year term as co-chair of the Public Relations and Community Liaison Committee of the Washtenaw County Bar Association.

• A plan by Ann Arbor-based Carlisle/Wortman Associates and the Macomb County Planning Department to make communities more livable for people as they age received the Michigan Association of Planning's award for Outstanding Planning Project for Public Outreach at MAP's annual conference Sept. 30.

• DTE Energy and the University of Michigan have joined together to launch the second Clean Energy Prize competition. The rules have broadened this year, and participation by a U-M student is no longer necessary. Any team that includes student representation from a Michigan college or university is eligible. The teams are challenged to develop the best business plan for bringing a new clean energy technology to market. Teams with winning ideas will share $100,000 in prize money, to be awarded in the spring of 2010. For more details, visit www.dtecleanenergyprize.com.

• The Historical Society of Michigan recently named Ann Arbor resident Patricia A. Majher the new editor of Michigan History magazine. Douglas D. Fisher of Whitmore Lake was named the assistant editor.

• Ann Arbor-based architecture firm A3C will celebrate receiving a LEED-CI Gold Certification for their Sustainable Showcase and UrbEn Retreat and the activation of their new demonstration solar photovoltaic system on Nov. 19.

• The Engineering Society of Detroit will present its 2009 Design and Construction Industry Summit Award to Doug Rothwell, president of Detroit Renaissance, for his outstanding contributions to the development of the region at the ESD Economic Forecast Conference today.

• The Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business announced Monday the recipients of the Fall 2009 Eugene Applebaum Dare to Dream Grant Program. Through the program, students apply for funding to advance their innovative, high-potential business concepts toward launch. In addition to the financial awards, grant recipients will receive counsel from leading business experts on business plan development and funding strategies. The following student teams received grants in October 2009:
* Hyperion - designer and manufacturer of light sport aircrafts
* MyBandStock - online fund-raising platform for performing artists
* Natural Aquaculture - antibiotic-free, hormone-free native fishery
* Structured Microsystems - offers three dimensionally stacked integrated circuits
* Ayah - alternative method to test the "human-ness" of Web site visitors
* Backyard Brains - designs and markets educational neuroscience kits
* Charter Jet Connect - online marketplace for booking charter aircraft
* City Connect - process solution for location-based government services
* Digital Receipts - digital capture and storage technology for receipts
* Innovascular - device to localize and control severe bleeding
* IRIZ Technologies - specialized service to screen the effect of compounds on the motility of target cancer cell lines
* Joe - point of sale system for coffee shops
* Lodestone Capital - bridges the divide between energy services companies and property owners reluctant to invest in energy efficient projects
* Nalu Solar Tools - Web-based software that offers operational support for solar PV contractors
* Securilink - personal safety device that utilizes cell phone technology
* Urban Food Gardener - online information and products for urban gardening
* A2D Technologies - analog to digital converter circuit design
* Capture Fitness - eco-gym that generates electricity and transfers it back into the electrical grid
* Carbon Growth - system that uses carbon dioxide to promote crop growth
* DesignFloor - product life cycle management software system for small and medium sized manufacturing companies
* Exercise Eco Energy - stationary bicycle that is an electrical generator
* Grub Grabber - Web application that alerts patrons to daily specials from local restaurants
* Heart Graffiti - silver commemorative jewelry for female college students
* LEAD Insurance Agency - insurance for sustainable commercial buildings
* Navitus Global - designing a low-cost, energy-efficient refrigerator for low-income and temporary emergency housing
* "No-Worries" Debit Card - debit card for international travelers
* The Pool - speed dating through interactive gaming
* RIPE Group - Biomimicry-based non-slip application for various applications
* Samaj - Indian senior-living facility in United States
* Unnamed product - hand-held device that combines technologies targeted at youth in China

• Halifax Regional Medical Center has signed a multi-year agreement to use Thomson Reuters Micromedex solutions as its source for evidence-based clinical reference information. Thomson Reuters is based in Ann Arbor.

• The Huron Valley chapter of the American Institute of Architects announced the recipients of its 2009 Honor Awards Program at its annual awards ceremony Oct.10. Seven projects were selected by jury to receive an Honor Award. They were Lord Aeck & Sargent Inc. of Ann Arbor in the building, sustainability and preservation categories; David Milling Architects of Ann Arbor in the interior architecture category; Hobbs+Black Associates Inc. of Ann Arbor in the interior architecture category; and Quinn Evans Architects of Ann Arbor, which won two awards in the preservation category for two different projects. Additionally, A Twenty Year Plus Recognition was presented to Cornerstone Design Inc. of Ann Arbor; a Firm Achievement Award was presented to Quinn Evans Architects of Ann Arbor; the Emerging Architect Award was presented to David Lewis of Lewis Greenspoon Architects of Ann Arbor; and the Distinguished Community Service Award was presented to Denis Schmiedeke of Ypsilanti.

• Greenview Data Inc., based in Ann Arbor, recently announced that it now offers compliance-ready e-mail encryption services through a partnership with ZixCorp.
