Is MINI supersizing with its new Countryman crossover vehicle?

By David Kwan

Draped under the large black cover was what appeared to be a supersized SUV bigger than a Toyota Sequoia. But after the veil was lifted MINI’s April Fools Day reveal introduced the highly anticipated crossover Countryman.

Jim McDowell, North American President, described the face as, “it looks like a MINI that has been weightlifting.”

For those who have shied away from the vehicle because of its diminutive size, but want go kart handling, the Countryman may be appealing according to chief of exterior design Marcus Syring. It offers 4 doors, is taller and wider, but still under 162 inches long.

Other features include an LED interior central rail for plugging in all the infotainment toys via USB and charging ports, and movable cupholders. MINI expects to achieve the EPA’s highest mileage rating for a crossover and is in final drivetrain testing now. The Countryman will be on sale in early 2011.

Two engines will be offered, the standard 1.6 liter and a twin scroll turbocharged S model. All wheel drive is offered as an optional extra with the upgraded engine, and 6 speed manual and automatic transmissions are offered in both the standard and S models.

Small cars were big in 2009. BMW’s iconic brand Mini enjoyed its second best year in the USA in 2009. Currently the national dealer network only comprises 83 locations, but MINI is expanding at about stores per year over the next two years.

Looking at Porsche’s success with the Cayenne crossover being the number one model of the iconic sports car maker, it would be no surprise if MINI finds that the Countryman becomes its best seller in the USA. Four doors, all wheel drive, fun to drive, and thrifty to operate with free 36 month maintenance are compelling brand attributes.

Classic marketing ploy used for everything (autos, homes, food..) for the US market the last 30 years. "Gee I really like my Civic (Odyssey, Camry, Focus, Corolla, SUV (any make), etc) but wish it just had more room because I'm getting bigger and could really use more space. Oh look the new model is roomier for just a bit more!". Go ahead compare the models of most any line and watch them amazingly grow and supersize, along with a majority of the US population waistline, over the years. The US market are simple sheep following the precise plan the marketing execs want them to by spending more money (that they don't have) on bigger everything regardless if its good for them and they actually need it or not. Compare the size of the original Mini to the latest "crossover" beheamoth. The supersizing of the US market continues on. Go team!
