NSF International can provide Energy Star certification for refrigeration industry

By Nathan Bomey

Ann Arbor Township-based standards auditing firm NSF International, a not-for-profit with a global footprint, said today that it had received approval to certify commercial refrigerators and freezers as compliant with Energy Star standards.

The certification means that NSF can become a “one-stop shop for energy efficiency testing and certification, which can help save manufacturers time and money,” NSF said in a news release.

The news comes as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is proposing that commercial foodservice equipment manufacturers be required to submit to the Energy Star testing program.

NSF’s approval came from the California Energy Commission, one of two entities approved by the EPA to provide efficiency certification through the Energy Star program.

NSF offers a variety of standards auditing services, ranging from food and water quality certification to toy manufacturing auditing and greenhouse gas emissions auditing.

“NSF International has a 65-year history in developing food equipment standards, and testing and certifying food equipment,” said Nancy Culotta, vice president of NSF, in a statement. “This approval from CEC to conduct energy efficiency testing now enables NSF to bundle Energy Star efficiency testing with sanitation certification, resulting in both time and cost savings.”

NSF employs 446 workers at its Ann Arbor Township headquarters on Dixboro Road. The firm has offices in 14 countries.
