New Mexican restaurant soon will open in Saline

By Paula Gardner

Cancun Mexican Grill should open by mid-December in Saline, according to a report in Patch.com.

The restaurant has been in planning stages since the owners signed a lease early this year. They'd originally hoped to open this summer.

The 3,103-square-foot building is located at 405 E. Michigan Ave. just east of downtown Saline — a space most recently occupied by Signature Grill until it closed in 2009.

From the previous AnnArbor.com story:

Restaurant owner Ismael Leon launched the first Cancun Mexican Grill in Kentucky in 1993. Since then, his business has expanded considerably, adding locations to Ohio and Michigan.

He said the business has seen success thanks to its “fresh food and good, clean atmosphere.”

“Those are the most important things for us,” he said. “It’s just a good product.”

He has other Michigan locations in Grand Ledge, Cadillac, Mount Pleasant and three in Okemos.

The owners received approval for a liquor license in August.

I hope this works out for them. I miss going into that building. I miss Jon Doms... a lot. When I was six years old and my Dad had me for the weekend, before he took me back to my Mom in Tecumseh, we stopped there and I had my very first slice of Pizza. That was 1967. I had my last slice of Pizza there in 2005-06. Man, that was good Pizza. Good luck to the new venture. I am looking forward to trying their Fajitas and Margys!

I ate at the one in Okemos a few months back, the food was inexpensive and tasty. This will be a good addition to the area

My experience of the two has been the opposite. None of the meals I've had at Cancun were watery, over-salted or served by indifferent wait staff.

Let's hope it does better than what has gone in there since Jon Doms closed. It was there for years and now the building can't seem to keep anything there.

How is it that Ann Arbor doesn't have even one good Mexican restaurant.?

Mexican food is generally not expensive, so I doubt the margin is high enough to afford Ann Arbor rents. No idea how Banditos and Sabor Latino have survived this long. Their food is terrible.
