Miss Michigan USA pageant moving from Port Huron to Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor is the new home to the Miss Michigan USA pageant.
The annual pageant plans to relocate to Ann Arbor after 10 years in Port Huron, according to the Port Huron Times Herald. The event, which draws some 3,500 attendees, will take place Sept. 10-11 at the University of Michigan's Power Center for the Performing Arts.
Pageant officials told the newspaper stalled contract negotiations
with the pageant's previous site in Port Huron prompted them to look
elsewhere. They also said Ann Arbor's "younger demographic" and "more
active night life" played a role in the decision, the Times-Herald
reported.
The move comes just weeks after Miss Michigan USA Rima Fakih was crowned Miss USA. Fakih is the pageant's first Arab American and Muslim winner.

My how we have changed in A2. When I first moved here in the early 70's, an advertising billboard had to be taken down because it featured a beautiful sexy woman. Now we are hosting Miss USA!!

I'm impressed, Paul. Few people actually understand the gaping differences between the two.

@unrulyfan: You have Miss USA confused with Miss America.

Too bad they have announced the Power Center as the location. I was thinking the County Fair Grounds would be appropriate based on something I read in a physical paper some 7 years ago :-)

Cool, the extra business will be great for the town. On a another note, I think beauty pagents are a boring relic from the past that are taking waaaay too long to die...all the so-called "purity" restrictions are ridiculous - you are judging women on APPEARANCE only, and a gal can't make the big $ in this 24/7 electro-porn economy without taking it all off or more...and the "kid" pagents are 1000 times worse.

The people of Port Huron need to get their heads extracted from their butts and realize that all the city is worth is a good time for the geriatric community. Yep, Desmonds landing is "nice", the flowers around the city look "nice", but the only thing going for the city are the dumpy bars (which not all 20 somethings enjoy and teens aren't old enough to go to) and The Raven (which is actually pretty cool). It would be cool to see some sort of an arcade, pizza shoppe, breakfast bar (bar that serves breakfast and other snacks, not alchohol while bands play), and maybe even a dancing hall that has themed nights like hip hop, ballroom, break dancing etc. Remember when the Piano Bar actually had piano players? It's just sad that no one can envision anything worth a good night out on the town for. I'm not saying it has to be exactly what I said, but geez, somebody get a clue! I don't blame the pageant for moving. Have fun in a REAL COOL CITY!

We care because it will bring an extra 3,500 people downtown on an away football Saturday (@Notre Dame)? Those people will need a place to stay, a place to eat, and hopefully extra recreation. It will give people who have never been to Ann Arbor a chance to see all of the great things we have to offer, and hopefully make them want to COME BACK! In other words WE CARE!

AnnArbor.com cares because this is news about Washtenaw County. Also significant is the revenue this will draw for local employees in hospitality, tourism and related industries.
