Meijer is only Michigan company on list of fastest growing retail chains

By Ben Freed

It probably comes as no surprise to Michiganders that the fastest growing retail chain in the state is Meijers. What’s more, MLive’s Melissa Anders reports that the chain recently made the National Retail Foundation’s Hot 100 list of the fastest growing retail chains in the country.

Meijer checked in as the No. 88 chain on the list, which was led by Pheonix-based Sprouds Farms market. The Kroger Co. was No. 61, also with a strong Midwest footprint.

According to Anders, the National Retail Foundation’s STORES magazine estimated $16.6 billion in retail sales for Meijer last year. The company broke ground on its first Detroit location in May.

Washtenaw county Meijers can be found on Ann Arbor-Saline Road in Ann Arbor, Jackson Road in Scio Township and Carpenter Road in Pittsfield Township.

And Meijer continues to treat it's employees like crap. It's getting worse every day.The Union? U have to be kidding. Also Wally Mart gives them all they want and more,so much so that today a good deal of their profit comes from cutting expenses rather than selling of merchandise but we never see the blance sheets because they are a private company. When Hank and Doug retire bets are the company gets sold to the highest bidder.

Hmmmmm... looks like they are the ONLY Michigan based retailer on that list. Of course, that would not be surprising, either. Pure Michigan.

What is the point of sitting around criticizing Meijers? Start your own large business and pay your 60,000 employees far more generously.

I wouldn't consider Meijer's a career job unless you get into management, and even that's questionable. But in their defense it would be a great entry level place to gain experience in retaining for a young adult. If you're 40 years old working at Meijer's I can see where your opinion would apply.

I went to the Meijers on A2-Saline Road today, it was an absulute madhouse. Why they don't have more checkouts open when it is that busy I will never understand. However I realized I forgot something on the way home and stopped at the Kmart on Maple Rd just as I was about to pass it. Oh My Goodness. I hadn't been to a Kmart in years because well they suck. The place was a ghost town, the item I needed was a smaller size and a higher price than any other store I normally would have gotten it. I don't think you can prop that horse up any longer. Kmart just needs to be put out of it's misery,

Cool, they do a great job and they are local, but local and pass savings on to us. If you haven't been to Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, do it, it is an awesome place and they support the arts guys. Go for it.

I love Meijers. they feature Michigan produce and it's very fresh. Fair prices and excellent products. Also...they carry nonGMO snack crakers and salsa., Look for the labels on Meijer brands. Go Meijer!

Now that produce is labeled with the country of origin I find I am limited to what I want to buy from "safe" countries. I get most of my veggies at the farmers market from local growers, the exception at meijers are bananas which are labeled grown in the USA the Meijers on Jackson is better than the one on a2-saline which is WAY better than the one on carpenter,

For a moment I thought that Meijer was starting to open stores outside Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. The first of the three around here opened in 1971. The design of the Meijer sign has changed twice since the Carpenter store opened, once since the Ann Arbor-Saline Road store opened. Ben, wherever the Detroit Meijer store is, I expect it is at a crossroads. The four Meijer stores I've shopped at (one is at Ford and Canton Center Road) are all at crossroads. Such a location gives motorists more driveways to approach Meijer from.
