Long-awaited Subway opens at the corner of Packard and Platt

By Lizzy Alfs

The Subway restaurant in the Platt Retail Center at the corner of Platt and Packard finally opened its doors to business this week.

Franchise owner Mike Heffner signed a deal to open the fast-food chain a year ago, but the space sat vacant while the retail center made modifications to meet building code.

Other tenants in the three-year-old Platt Retail Center include the Ann Arbor Driving School, a hair salon and a Kumon Learning Center.

There is still one space available in the complex, which is being marketed by Jim Chaconas and Brendan Cavender of Colliers International for an annual $14 per square foot.

In late August, Heffner also signed a deal to open a 1,100-square-foot Subway at 1251 N. Maple Rd. just south of the Miller Avenue intersection.

It’s the fourth new store Subway has said it would open in Ann Arbor within the last year, adding to about a dozen already here.

Yay, another corporate chain restaurant trying to squeeze other Mom & Pop style restaurants out of business.

Long-awaited.... yes indeed! The building was almost completed when I moved into that area in the summer of 2008. Six months later some bricks showed up in the parking lot and then they were installed as pathways and stuff. About 6 months after that a sign appeared in the window stating that it was the future home of a Subway. Then about 6 months after that a couple of things showed up in the store. Then it stayed the same for about a year. Then an "official-looking" Subway sign was installed. Then I moved to Dexter. Now, about 8 months after moving, it's open.

I Strongly encourage people to read the ingredients of their meat. Once you read it...you won't eat it.

Question Ann Arbor Dot Com - Why don't you cover LOCALLY OWNED businesses that open in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti? Seriously - I know of several new stores that have opened that would be of interest to the public besides Subway and McDonald's but you don't cover it. What's the deal?

What?? Long awaited. There is another one on Wastenaw. I fail to see how another fast food chain restaurant opening is news. If it was another Mc Donald's or Burger King no one would have blinked.

At this point this story has 18 comments. That is awesome.

Packard and Platt? I was scratching my head, knowing what is on all 4 corners of Packard and Platt, none of them being this shopping center. I finally resorted to google maps and discovered the new Subway is on Platt, about half a block south of Packard, on the west side of Platt. I highly doubt anyone who has actually been to this establishment would say it's "on the corner". That would be Rite Aid.

I don't remember a similar write-up when the Subway at Plymouth Green Crossings opened a month or two ago. Why the selective reporting with regard to mediocre fast food?

This is a story because of the long delay in opening. It has been sitting there, complete with signs, finished interior, ready to open for months. I can't be the only person in Ann Arbor who wondered what the heck was going on.

I agree! There is a serious lack of sandwich reporting on this website. I, for one, love sandwiches. What if all the pet stories were sandwich stories instead? Everyone isn't into pets, but who doesn't like sandwiches? Not anyone I want living in my town. PS if annarbor.com puts this advice into action, I expect a share of what is sure to be a tremendous surge in profits.

Long live American mediocrity. Long live the burgeoning Ann Arbor mediocrity born at the hands of high rents that only corporate coffers can pay.

"Long-awaited"? Was the 1 mile trip up to Washtenaw too much of a hike?

I'm not a Subway fan, but my kids are and they're excited this one opened within walking distance of where we live. I took them there Thursday night for subs. They were really, really slow, but I'm sure that's just because it's so new. Hopefully things will get more expedient. My kids were happy, though.

"Long awaited"? By whom?

I've been eagerly awaiting the opening too. This is within walking distance of my home and Subway is so much better than the typical fast food joints. Strange that it took so long. It has been sitting there, completed, for months.

"The only affordable pick up food in this area of town is Little Ceasar's, and I've had enough $5 pizza. Bring on the Subway!!!" Craig, are you and @itsworthwhatyoupaidforit doppelgangers?

For much better fast food, try the meat pies, spinach pies, hummus and falafel at Aladdin's Market around the corner on Packard, or the taqueria a few doors down.

81wolverine, your hyperbole aside, just because I/we embrace this Subway doesn't mean we want to see a fast food place on every corner. Ultimately demand or the lack of demand will dictate its success or failure.

I agree. Subways are everywhere. This event might be long awaited from the restaurant owner's point of view and to those who want to see a fast-food place on every corner, but not to the rest of us.

By me too and several members of my family as well! The only affordable pick up food in this area of town is Little Caesar's, and I've had enough $5 pizza. Bring on the Subway!!!
