Fidelity Bank branch on West Stadium closing

By Dan Meisler

The Fidelity Bank branch at the intersection of West Stadium and Liberty will close, a bank official said, and operations will be consolidated to its Eisenhower Parkway location.

Michael J. Ross, president and CEO of the bank's holding company, Dearborn Bancorp, said the branch will close in October. Fidelity has been operating out of the West Stadium location for five years. Ross said changes to the banking industry during that time, including the growth of electronic banking, remote capture of deposits and mobile banking, led to the decision to consolidate.

Cost-cutting for the company, which reported an operating loss of $15.3 million in the first half of the year, and the fact that the lease on the property is ending next year, also were factors in the closure, Ross said.

"Frankly, it's a redundant branch," Ross said.

Staff at the Stadium branch will be absorbed into other locations, and there will be no net reductions in employees, he added.

The corner of Stadium and Liberty is home to two other banks, Key Bank and Bank of Ann Arbor. The Fidelity branch there used to be Bank of Washtenaw, until the location was taken over by Fidelity in 2004.

Ross said customers and regulators had been notified of the branch closure.

The Dearborn-based bank has 17 branches in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties. It has total deposits of $813.2 million, including $19 million at the West Stadium branch, according to its Web site.
