The annual Sentinels of Safety award program, sponsored by the MSHA and the National Mining Association, recognize achievement of outstanding safety records and encourage development of more effective accident prevention programs among the nation's mining industries.
To be eligible for the award, a mine must complete the year without a lost-time injury and achieve overall safety performance better than the national average. To qualify, Pit 9 worked approximately 18,000 hours with no injuries and no lost time accidents during the year of 2009.
Pit 9 also received the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Environmental Excellence Award. This award provides national recognition for NSSGA producer members' operations actively contributing to the maintenance of the environment in and around their operations as evidenced by a corporate commitment to the exemplary use of environmental controls and systems. The award is based, in part, on the extent to which an operation meets and exceeds technical, environmental and regulatory requirements.
Additionally, for the eighth time since 2002, Pit 9 employees received the Michigan Aggregate Association Safety Award. This award recognizes members that encourage and promote a safe work environment.
The Pit 9 crew is made up of the following Barrett Paving employees: Jim Sauder, Tim Nine, Brian Bell, Tim Bryan, Brian Yape, Scott Downie, Jeff Zeleny and Julie Bruckner.
