Ann Arbor startup companies take top prizes in state business plan competition

Ann Arbor companies won first place in multiple categories at the Michigan business plan competition put on by Great Lakes Entrepreneur’s Quest Thursday night according to a report from Crain’s Detroit Business.

Technology spinoff Monarch Antenna Inc. won first place, which came with a $5,000 prize, in the emerging-company category. The company, spun off of Delphi Technologies Inc. in 2007 is developing a new antenna for smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

Other Ann Arbor winners include Exo Dynamics LLC, who won third place in the emerging businesses category as well as AdAdapted LLC and Kymeira, who won first and third place respectively in the new-business-idea category.

Exo Dynamics, formerly housed in the University of Michigan’s TechArb, is creating a special back brace for doctors performing surgery.

Kymeira, based on a new ceramic material that is thermally stable at over 3,000 degrees, previously won $25,000 in the student business category at the Accelerate Michigan innovation competition. AdAdapted came away with a $2,000 prize for developing new ways to add product placement in mobile games an apps.
