Ann Arbor-based Proquest trims 80 jobs in restructuring

The latest changes at Ann Arbor-based Proquest involve management restructuring of 3 business units, a move that resulted in the trimming of about 80 jobs.

The changes affect “less than 5 percent of our total workforce,” said Elliot Forsyth, senior vice president of the information IT company.

Ten of the positions were based at the Ann Arbor headquarters. Others locations affected include offices in New Jersey, Boca Raton, Fla., Bethesda, Md., and Seattle. Some international employees were affected as well.

The layoffs, announced this week and completed on Friday, stemmed from restructuring to align marketing and management functions among various divisions.

Acquisitions over the years of Dialog LLC, RR Bowker and RefWorks resulted in redundancies, Forsyth said.

The changes consolidate the management of those divisions and some of the functions.

Forsyth said employees will leave the company between late December and late March. Some have been offered relocation opportunities.

Amid those changes, Proquest is expanding its Hong Kong office in 2010 as it seeks to grow the Asian market, and it also is moving some production to a new facility in Ypsilanti Township.

The company now employs about 1,550 across the globe, including about 540 at its Ann Arbor headquarters.
