Stadium Hardware named best hardware store in Washtenaw County; this week, vote for best ice cream place

By AnnArbor.com Staff

What’s the best hardware store in Washtenaw County? The voters in AnnArbor.com’s BestOf contest say it’s Stadium Hardware, which won 1st place, garnering triple the votes of any competitor.

Best hardware store voting began last Sunday and ended at 11:59 p.m. Saturday.

Stadium Hardware rose to the top quickly and remained in the No. 1 position the entire week. Barnes Ace Hardware and Carpenter Bros. Hardware Do It Center competed for second and third place with Barnes ending the contest in second and Carpenter Bros. in third.

This week’s contest is for best place for ice cream.

Here's the scoop: Everybody screams for frozen dessert treats. Gelato, sorbet, ice cream, frozen yogurt — they all transport us back to a time when the chime of the ice cream truck got the adrenaline surging through our veins. We measure the start of summer by the length of the line at our favorite ice cream joint.

What's your favorite place for ice cream? Cast your vote.

Readers can suggest contenders for upcoming contests by going to http://www.annarbor.com/bestof/#bestof_schedule.

And don't forget, everyone who votes will be entered into a drawing each week for a chance to win a prize. This week's prize is for a $50 gift card.

I've lived a lot of places and fixed a lot of things. Stadium Hardware is the best. I've actually run into relatives I hadn't seen in a while who were there looking for some hard-to-find item. They deserve the kudos.

My handy neighbor, who doesn't subscribe to annarbor.com, does shop at Stadium Hardware, so I think this victory for the store indicates he has good judgment pertaining to hardware stores. I once bought dryer ductwork there last year because he recommended I get it there. So I did. Dryer ductwork was purchased at Ace one or two years earlier, but if I ever need a duct section shortened, I'll ask him who can and will cut it right in the store, like Builders Square did; they've been gone for decades.

The issue is not whether Stadium is the best hardware store in town but whether it is simply the best store in town. At the same time, I no longer live near to it, so I go more often to ACE Barnes on Washtenaw, and I have had quite good service there. Phil Mickelson may not have been as good as Tiger Woods in his heyday, but he was still Phil Mickelson.

It has been several years since I've been there, since my experiences were all negative. The customer service was terrible--I was usually ignored and when I was finally given assistance, it was given reluctantly. I like to support local businesses, but Stadium Hardware staff made it clear they didn't care about my business, so I go where I can actually get some help. Having read some of these comments, I'm hoping that things have changed there and that the staff are doing a better job with customers.

Being that I'm female and know nothing about plumbing, I decided to change all my own faucets to save money. How hard could it be? Actually, after talking with the Stadium Hardward guys on multiple trips it wasn't too bad. Sure, it took a weekend to change 4 faucets and each one had separate issues, but they helped me figure out all the little things that weren't making sense and even made a part for me and charged me one dollar for the part & labor. I owe those guys, they're the best!

I have to say that the folks at Jack's, and Aco on Washtenaw and the one down in Ypsi will do the best they can to help you in a pinch too.

The guys at Stadium Hardware can seem a little rough around the edges sometimes but believe me, they will bend over backwards to help solve your problem, or find the part you need, or fix your faucet, etc. If you have a problem and need help these are the people to see!

BY the way BOB. If you think not showing the results until the end would have made a difference you belong at Ace.

If there is a hardware store in the state that comes close to stadium, I would like to know where it is! Ace is fine for women! The plumbing "dept" at ace has empty bins and others with 1 item.

Actually, Stadium is a great hardware store for this woman. I've had a couple of dumb blond (even though I'm not blond or dumb) moments in there and they have helped me without judging.

Their prices are in line with the big guys, too. Spend your money locally, if possible.

The service at Stadium is outstanding.

I'm surprised it was as close as it was. Stadium hardware is ten times the hardware store of anything else in AA.

My usual comment, which I assume will be ignored as usual: These polls don't mean much because you post the results as they go along. Try announcing the results after the voting . . .

I agree 100%. Posting the results as they go is prejudicial in favor of the early leader(s) and it reduces the reliability of the results.
