Bread Basket Deli voted best place to buy a sandwich; this week, vote for best place for live music

By AnnArbor.com Staff

What’s the best place to buy a sandwich in Washtenaw County? The voters in AnnArbor.com’s BestOf contest say it’s Bread Basket Deli, which won with 253 votes, leading Zingerman’s Deli, which garnered 186 votes.

Voting in the sandwich competition began last Sunday and ended at 11:59 p.m. Saturday.

Zingerman’s Deli took the lead right out of the gate. However, Bread Basket Deli gained momentum midweek until Friday afternoon, when Zingerman’s took the lead once again. The two jostled for position Saturday, with Bread Basket hanging on to win. Dimo’s Deli and Donuts held steady in third place, with 70 votes.

This week’s contest is for best place for live music.

Love your live music at ear-splitting volumes, preferably with a PBR in your hand (or spilled down your back)? Or are you a symphony veteran who knows better than to clap between movements? Whatever your preferences, our area has an impressive array of live music venue options. Cast your vote.

Readers can suggest contenders for upcoming contests by going to http://www.annarbor.com/bestof/#bestof_schedule.

And don't forget, everyone who votes will be entered into a drawing each week to win a prize. This week's prize is for a $50 gift card to The Ark.

Folks need to keep in mind that the only thing these 'contests' are about is page hits, which relate directly to advertising rates. Nothing more, nothing less. Therefore, they are absolutely meaningless.

The contest isn't "Best Value on a Good Sandwich," it's "Best Place to Buy a Sandwich." Price shouldn't have anything to do with the voting. Such skewed results as always.

well lets not forget that we still have to BUY and many of us can't afford Zingermans prices. So yes BB has it hands down. What world are you living in that price is not a factor when considering where to eat? BB is better food anyway.

For those of you who bash the Bread Basket and claim that "sales" alone should be the indicator for the tally and that Zingerman's would be #1, how about you consider that there are 8 Bread Basket Deli's between the Detroit and Ann Arbor metro areas vs. Zingerman's one. So if you want to go by "sales" then Bread Basket is STILL the winner. I'm glad the BB won because they deserve it. They don't rip people off as does Zingerman's. $16 for a sandwich that costs $9 at the Bread Basket which is twice the size and better tasting. Thank you.

Terry - technically the contest was for "Best place to buy a sandwich."

Also would like to add for all the ignorant people out there... This award, or whatever you want to call it, was based on THE BEST SANDWICH, not sales, not price, not name, just THE BEST SANDWICH. So those of you who are arguing "sales" would put Zingerman's in front can't read directions, so maybe you shouldn't have voted to begin with. Another reason why you can't put "sales" as the determinate factor is because Zingerman's sales are from more than just sandwiches. Bread Baskets sales are probably 90% from its sandwiches. Forgive me, everyone, but I can get pretty involved with these kinds of debates. Especially if its something I believe in fighting for.

Zingerman's is great, but not affordable for the everyday. And when you have bought three sandwiches for $50 bucks you wonder why you were not eating steaks/seafood/or sitting down at your favorite place with a drink too ! That is what makes BBD and others challengers to this five star institution. All annarbor.com is doing is a popularity pole on a select group of readers willing to blog in their opinion. So take it for what it is....

Also, the sanwiches have more meat at the Bread Basket. They're kind of like the Sandwiches in Ney York, were they're stacked so high, you can barely get your mouth around them. Last time I ordered a Large #1 at Zingermans, I though they may have given me a small by mistake.

I voted for Bread Basket because Zingermans is way to over priced. In my oppinion, the quality of corned beef is better at the Bread Basket, but the bread at Zingermans is unbeatable. Price point was the tie breaker for me.

Love Bread Basket, love Zingerman's ... but my vote went to DiBella's, even though they're a chain and not Michigan-based. Best subs in town.

If sales are the proof of who has the best food Mc Donalds is the clear winner.

As one commenter noted, this is not a scientific survey, and the sales that a place generates are the real indicator of which place has the best sandwiches. Judging by that standard, it would seem Zingerman's is the real winner.

I agree with Atticus. In addition, if you go by the "sales" standard, that is a false representation of the actual numbers. Zingerman's prices are DOUBLE, if not MORE, than Bread Basket, so bread basket needs to sell 2 sandwiches for every 1 that Zingerman's sells to reach the "sales" tactic you speak of, which in turn, means that bread basket gets 2 customers for every 1 customer that zingermans gets. This may be confusing, but the bottom line is, Bread Basket deserves the win as they ARE the better sandwich.

A higher traffic area might generate more sales. But thats no indication that the food is any better.

It looks like Ypsi/AA is the farthest west of BBD's seven southeast Michigan locations. I couldn't tell immediately where their corporate headquarters is located. Anybody know?

There are no corporate headquarters. It's family owned.

The Bread Basket has very good corned beef for a more reasonable price than Zings. There are better delis in metro Detroit, but the bread basket corned beef is the best I've found in the A2 area.

So happy to hear the The Bread Basket won. I happen to love both of these places but The Bread Basket is easy to get to, the food is just as good and it is half the cost. For me the choice is easy. I most likely will not eat at Zingermans again.

C'mon folks. People vote with their wallets and their appetites. Check out Zingerman's Deli turnover and sales vs. who? The Breadbasket Deli?? Businesses have learned that padding votes in this unscientific poll can get them attention, publicity and recognition. So....? What do you expect?

Yes, I agree with DBH...totally thought Zingerman's would take, it no problem. Will have to try this sometime.
